Melania Trump emotional during heartfelt eulogy at mother's funeral
Melania Trump delivered a heartfelt eulogy at her mum's funeral, calling her a "ray of light in the darkest days".
The former First Lady spoke at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church near Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, following the passing of her mother, Amalija Knavs, on January 9, aged 78. Melania described her mum as "nurturing" and with an "unwavering dedication", especially towards her grandson, Barron, 17.
"Her nurturing spirit had no limits, creating a legacy that will last for generations," Melania said during the eulogy. "With her beauty and impeccable sense of style she turned heads. But it was her unwavering dedication and hard work that made her exceptional." She also mentioned how her mum showered Barron with "affection, illuminating his world with love, tender care and unwavering devotion". She described her as a "ray of light in the darkest of days".
Melania was visibly emotional as she remembered her mother in the church, surrounded by family and friends dressed in all black. A photo shows Barron flanked on either side by Donald and Melania as they exit the church following the service, all looking sombre as they mourn the death of their loved one.
Melania Trump said in her eulogy, "In her presence, the world seemed to shimmer with radiance and joy. Our bond was unbreakable." She also talked about missing the "conversations that flowed effortlessly with grace and charm" with her mum. "Rest in peace my beloved mother," she ended her speech.
Kamala Harris and George Floyd's brother among hundreds at Tyre Nichols funeralDonald Trump shared on Truth Social: "Today will be devoted to the funeral (Celebration!!!) of a GREAT WOMAN, 'Babi,' the Beloved Mother of Melania and Grandmother of Barron - And what a Woman she was!!!" He had earlier called her a "great and beautiful mother" and said, "This is a very sad night for the entire Trump family!!! Melania's great and beautiful mother, Amalija, has just gone to a beautiful place in the sky. She was an incredible woman, and will be missed far beyond words!"
Donald flew into Florida early to be with Melania at the funeral, as they followed the hearse in a line of black SUVs. Melania's dad Viktor was there too, at the church where she got married nearly 19 years ago. The hearse carrying Ms Knavs' casket was followed by a large Secret Service motorcade, arriving at the church just after 10am. Her widowed husband, Viktor, looked visibly upset as he joined the family. Melania, Donald, Barron and Viktor walked to the church in silence, under the watchful eyes of the agents.
Reverend Tim Schenck conducted the service, greeting the family with a nod and quiet words of comfort at the church entrance. Behind her sunglasses, Melania remained expressionless as they watched Knavs' coffin being carried into the church. It's worth noting that Melania had missed Christmas with her family to spend time with her ill mother.
