Anne's touching gesture comforted Harry in his time of need

Prince Harry was comforted by his aunt Princess Anne after being told of the Queen’s death, a royal expert has claimed.

The heartbroken Duke of Sussex arrived too late to see his beloved grandmother before she died in September 2022, as he had to fly to Scotland from the US following news of the Queen’s ailing condition. Harry later recalled in his explosive memoir Spare that he was informed of the monarch’s death via BBC News on his phone, and travelled alone to Balmoral Castle where his grandmother had passed away.

In a new book by royal biographer Robert Hardman, Charles III: New King, New Court: The Inside Story, he claimed that Princess Anne - the Queen’s only daughter - had been "indispensable" when news broke of Her Majesty’s death, and was on hand to immediately comfort the distraught prince when he arrived at Balmoral. "She was there when Prince Harry eventually arrived. She greeted him with a hug and escorted him up to the Queen's bedroom, where he was left to pay his respects to his late grandmother," the book stated.

Harry was reportedly devastated after it emerged his father King Charles and brother Prince William had a private dinner in the hours following the Queen’s death, and did not invite him. Instead, he joined the family dinner at Balmoral, alongside other senior members of the Royal Family. The 73-year-old was praised in Robert’s new book, as he claimed Charles wanted his sister to be a pillar of support to grieving family members as they arrived at Balmoral.

"One of the King's first decisions was to ask Princess Anne to take charge of the house party now rapidly expanding at Balmoral Castle. The Princess Royal would prove indispensable over the next few days," he wrote. The biography also revealed that Princess Anne was at her mother’s bedside during her final hours, along with the Queen's closest friend, Angela Kelly.

Other extracts from the book, which has been serialised in the Daily Mail, claim that Charles was notified of his mother’s death as he returned to Balmoral after mushroom picking in the lavish estate grounds. It also alleges the King notified his sons William and Harry of the Queen’s deteriorating condition and told them to come to Balmoral as soon as possible. The Duke of Sussex then embarked on a frantic mission from Los Angeles - where he lives with wife Meghan Markle - to get to Scotland before his grandmother passed away, but sadly arrived in the country to the devastating news that the Queen had died.
