Kate Middleton maintains a close social circle including her best friend of many years, with whom she once jetted off to Ibiza after splitting up with William.

Ever since the now Princess of Wales first began dating the future king, she’s had a core group of people around her. Under the harsh beam of the royal spotlight, they’ve acted as her support system. This group is composed of a wide range of people, some of whom have known the future queen for years and hail from her school or university days.

One of them is Emilia Jardine-Paterson, who attended Marlborough College with Kate and has known her ever since. Emilia was also said to have been in William’s social circles since their youth and is sometimes credited with introducing them to each other at St Andrew’s University, Tatler reported. The friends even jetted off to Ibiza on holiday following Kate’s brief split with William back in 2007.

Such is the closeness of their bond that Kate even made Emilia one of Prince George’s godmothers. But the links between the two don’t end there. The younger brother of Emilia’s husband, David of the Jardines banking family, dated Kate’s younger sister Pippa for a few years.

The families have sometimes attended church together at the Church of St Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate. Born Emilia d’Erlanger, she was once described her at the “it girl” of Marlborough College and she’s since started a successful interior design business, d’Erlanger and Sloan. It has been said that she also helped Kate with her redecoration of Anmer Hall. Emilia is a mum-of-three who welcomed her last child named Lucia Beatrice India, in May 2020.

Kate will be supported by friends and family as she recuperates after it was announced today that she underwent abdominal surgery. Kensington Palace said that the operation had been successful and that after a period recovering in hospital, she would be away from her duties as a working royal.

Kensington Palace said: "Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to The London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery. The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery.

"Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter. The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness' progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
