Fargo season 5 hailed a 'masterpiece' as finale leaves fans 'breathless'

Fargo season five has been hailed a “masterpiece” by fans who were left “breathless” watching its tense finale. The final episode of the black comedy crime-drama dropped in the UK on Wednesday (January 17), bringing to a close a bloody and action-packed series that has been met with rave reviews.

Set in the snowy US states of Minnesota and North Dakota, Fargo’s fifth instalment centres on mild-mannered and seemingly ordinary Dorothy “Dot” Lyon. After an unexpected series of events, the typically Midwestern housewife lands in hot water with the authorities and she is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.

Created and primarily written by Noah Hawley, each season of Fargo follows a new story centred around a new set of characters, while taking place in a shared universe inspired by the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning film of the same name. The latest season stars Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Stranger Things’ Joe Keery.

Fargo has been met with widespread acclaim since its launch in 2014 and has picked up a host of awards including two Emmys, three Golden Globes and eight Critics’ Choice awards. Previous seasons have starred some huge Hollywood names, with the likes of Ewan McGregor, Martin Freeman, Chris Rock, Jesse Plemons, Billy Bob Thornton and Jason Schwartzman.

Season five has also earned overwhelmingly positive reviews from both critics and general audiences and currently boasts a Certified Fresh 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. It picked up three nominations at this year’s Golden Globes in the limited or anthology series categories, earning a nod for best series – which it lost to Netflix’s Beef – while Hamm and Temple were nominated for best actor and actress respectively.

Since the tenth and final episode dropped, fans of the series have been flooding social media with their reactions to the season five finale, with some saying it left them “breathless.” Writing on X – formerly Twitter – @bwad_pwofo said: “You will not find a better 15 minutes of TV than the last scene of Fargo season five.”
