A man grew his hair for three years in a bid to help make a wig for his girlfriend who suffers from alopecia.

Cody Ennis decided to grow his hair 2 feet long as a gift for his girlfriend, Hannah Hosking, who is bald due to the hair-loss condition. Hannah, a 27 year old content creator, jokingly asked for 30 inches of hair, warning him it could take up to four years. But Cody, an engineer, was up for the challenge and started growing his hair in May 2020.

When his hair got long enough to touch his chin, the 31 year old sought professional advice to keep it healthy. He followed online tutorials, regularly washed and conditioned his hair, and wore it in gentle styles like braids. Cody even wore a satin bonnet to bed to prevent dryness and breakage. In October, when his hair reached 29 inches, a barber relative carefully cut off his long locks and they sent them to a wig maker.

Hannah was over the moon when she received her $899 lace-front wig in the post. She surprised her boyfriend Cody by wearing it when he woke up, and she's excited to wash it and see his natural curls form. Cody, who is yet to propose, says he'd love for Hannah to wear the wig on their wedding day. Hannah, from Waterford, Michigan, US, said: "When the wig arrived I was so excited, I cried. It won't be an everyday wig for me because I want it to last as long as possible."

"Receiving this three-and-a-half-year gift in the making was overwhelming. It feels surreal, it feels like a movie. I can't believe he dedicated so long of his life and his time into doing this for me. It makes me feel very comforted and safe to know I have someone in my life who is willing to go this extra mile and go above and beyond."

"I'm excited to wash it and then see his natural curls come in as it's similar the curl pattern I had before I lost my hair. It's my prized possession. Cody said he wants me to wear it on our wedding day." Hannah was diagnosed with alopecia at the age of seven when she developed bald patches that initially were easily hidden.

Five years ago, Hannah's hair loss sped up, including her eyebrows and eyelashes. So, she decided to shave off what was left and began wearing wigs. She met Cody in November 2019, who loved her bald head because it didn't tickle him when they cuddled.

During the Covid lockdown, just six months into their relationship, Cody decided to grow his hair out for Hannah to make a special wig. Hannah shared: "Five years ago [when my hair started falling out] I started looking sick so then I just shaved it all off. "When I met Cody he had a short, cute haircut that looked very '9-5 job'.

"I don't know exactly what made him want to grow his hair out for me. He just looked at me one day and was like 'I guess if I grew my hair out for you, how long would you want it?' I jokingly said 'I want 30 inches' because I love long hair.

He said 'ok great I'm going to grow my hair out for you'. I said it was going to take three or four years and he said 'ok'. Then he did it and grew 29 inches." Not only did he grow his hair, but he also cared for his locks to ensure they were in the best condition before being made into a wig.

Hannah added: "As soon as it started getting near his chin he was like 'I need to take serious care of this'. He reached out to my niece who's a cosmotologist and asked how to take care of it so it was healthy when it was time to cut it."

"He bought really expensive shampoos and conditioners. He watched tons of videos on how to properly wash and condition his hair. Every night he slept with it in braids or with a silk bonnet on to help prevent breakage."

Hannah shared that when Cody's hair hit the right length, she recruited her barber cousin to help cut it to be transformed into the wig by Florida Fancies. She said, "I started to put his hair into sections to cut it but then we both got nervous that I was going to cut it wrong so asked my cousin who is a barber to do it."

"We wrapped each individual section we cut off in paper towels, bagged them up and sent them on their way." Couple months later, Hannah received her custom wig, which she tried on to surprise Cody. Hannah expressed: "When the wig arrived it felt like a dream, I couldn't believe it was here. Cody was asleep so I did my make-up, put on a cute outfit, put the wig on and I woke him up. When I first looked at myself in the mirror I felt loved and so much love for him." Cody said jokingly: "I figured if I grew my hair out for her she couldn't break up with me."
