A woman was left "caked in blood" after her monster husband accused her of not "working hard enough" and hit her 30 times in the face and head.

Martins Kovers became "enraged" after his unnamed wife went out drinking following a heated argument with him. He angrily accused her of not working hard enough to support them and he then repeatedly lashed out at her, Hull Crown Court heard. Despite his outburst, he had not been working at the time and she had been supporting the family by herself.

Police arrived at the scene to a woman "caked in blood" and with shocking injuries after being slapped around the head and face about 30 times. Kovers, 54, of Hull, but recently in custody on remand, admitted assaulting the woman and causing actual bodily harm, on October 7. He had denied inflicting grievous bodily harm but that charge was dropped.

Cathy Kioko-Gilligan, prosecuting, said that police went to a house in Axdane, Orchard Park estate, Hull, at about 11pm after a report of domestic violence. "Her face was caked in blood, her eyes were swollen to the extent that she couldn't open them, she had a large laceration to her left eye and blood was coming from her nose," said Miss Kioko-Gilligan. The woman had a cut to her left eyelid, both eyes were bloodshot and bruised. Both her ears were bruised and there were bruises on her knuckles.

She said that the domestic situation had worsened over time. She had left the property on October 7 after an argument and she had been away from the home before the police arrived. Miss Kioko-Gilligan said: "Her absence enraged the defendant, her husband, who abused her over not working enough and not looking after their children.

"He had then attacked her, slapping her about 30 times to the head and face. He went out for a cigarette and the victim contacted the police. When the police arrived, they saw the victim's injuries and arrested the defendant." Kovers did not comment on police questions during the interview.

David Godfrey, mitigating, said that Kovers was disgusted with himself and bitterly regretted his behaviour. If he could turn back the clock, he would. Kovers was very sorry for what he had done and he accepted that the marriage was over. He wanted to move back to his home country and put his life back together. He had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty and made admissions.

Kovers was jailed for 18 months and was given a five-year restraining order. He had a Slovakian interpreter to help him with the court proceedings.
