A young girl was killed in front of her horrified siblings after a crocodile launched a terrifying attack on a river.

The nine-year-old, known as Desi, from Indonesia, was paddling in the water when the massive reptile lunged at her last week. She was fishing with her two older brothers when the beast dragged her into the water. Her siblings dashed back to their village in Lemoambo to call for help but the crocodile disappeared with the girl.

Desi's remains were sadly found hundreds of yards along the river six hours after the attack took place. Her loved ones plan to hold a funeral for her at the Lemoambo Village public cemetery on Thursday afternoon, reports The Sun. Police chief Muhammad Nekson said: "Initially, the situation on the river was peaceful until suddenly, the victim was snatched by a crocodile. Her older brothers tried to help, but she was thrashed by the crocodile until she drowned."

Over in Australia, a nine-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was attacked by a crocodile whilst swimming in the Kakadu National Park on Saturday. The child had been playing in a restricted area in the Northern Territory when the reptile set its sights on him.

Emergency services flew him to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical but stable condition at around 9pm. Craig Garraway, of St John Ambulance, said the boy had suffered “a number of puncture wounds” from a crocodile.

He told local media that the victim seemed to be recovering and added: "Probably a lucky escape I would suggest.” The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory stressed that rangers had captured over 50 crocodiles by popular swimming points in recent years. “The arrival of the monsoon season brings a wave of excitement as billabongs, rivers and road culverts fill up once again.

"This abundance of water makes it easy for saltwater crocodiles to move around, with some travelling up to 300 km in search of food or a mate. Wildlife rangers have caught over 50 saltwater crocodiles in local road culverts, locations where people previously enjoyed a dip with friends. Saltwater crocodiles are dangerous, stay safe this wet season. Stay at least 5 metres back from the water’s edge at all times and keep an eye on your mates.”
