Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left Queen Elizabeth II "furious" when they named their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, something one expert has said they "hadn't earned the right to use".

Lilibet is the affectionate childhood nickname of the late Queen and was used only by her parents, her sister Princess Margaret, her husband Prince Philip and a handful of close friends. At the time of Lilibet's birth in June 2021, there were reports the Queen hadn't approved the name choice, but the Sussexes slammed these rumours as "defamatory".

However, according to royal author Robert Hardman's new biography, Charles III: New King, New Court, a source said the Queen was "as angry as I'd ever seen her" over claims she had given her blessing. Journalist Celia Walden, the wife of Piers Morgan, believes it was Meghan who was behind Lilibet's name.

"I think we can all agree that 'Lilibet' had Meghan stamped all over it," she wrote in The Telegraph. Celia said the intention behind Lilibet's name is "clear as day" and suggested it was used to create an impression of closeness between Meghan and Queen Elizabeth.

She added: "So important was it seemingly to carve out the narrative put forward so stridently to Oprah and ensure it was set in stone – Meghan and the Queen would share blankets in cars." Celia claimed the Duchess of Sussex would have been thinking about the future and the "narrative" she could create with Lilibet's name.

The journalist also insisted Meghan hadn't "earnt the right to use [Lilibet]" as a name for her daughter. Celia's husband Piers has a complicated history with Meghan, going from friends to enemies in a matter of years.

Piers claimed he had been "ghosted" by Meghan, but said they were close friends beforehand. Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, he said their relationship started when they began following each other on social media in 2015.

"She even started sending me early preview episodes of her show so we could debate juicy storylines yet to air – which we did, at length," he said. Piers also claimed he put Meghan in the taxi that led her to the party where she met Prince Harry, but said he never heard from her after that.

Piers claimed: "She met Prince Harry at the dinner that night, went on a solo date with him the next night, and I never heard from her again. Not a word. I’d been ghosted." Since then, the TV host has been very critical of the Sussexes.
