Piers Morgan has sparked a debate amongst his followers after slamming Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

After Lilibet was born in June 2021, it was claimed Harry had sought permission from the Royal Family to name her after her great-grandmother, who reportedly gave her blessing before she passed away a year later. Named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, the youngster's Christian name pays tribute to Elizabeth II's pronunciation of her own name as a toddler herself.

The name went on to become a family nickname for Her Majesty, and was said to have been used by close family members and later her husband, Prince Phillip. Harry and Meghan's announcement of Lilibet’s birth at the time, meanwhile, read: "Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet."

A palace source soon made claim that the Queen had not been asked, something the Sussexes described as "false and defamatory". Now, in a new book by Royal journalist Robert Hardman titled Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, a former member of the Queen's staff has backed up that claim.

The staffer explained that the late Queen appeared "as angry as I’d ever seen her" after the Harry and Meghan made the public claim they wouldn't have used the monarch's nickname without her "support".

Addressing the dispute, Talk TV's Piers wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Wow... so they lied about having her support. Imagine doing that to the Queen as she neared the end of her life? Just disgusting." His comment was met with a mixture of support and criticism amongst his 8.7 million followers, however.

One user agreed: "It's truly disappointing to see them deceive her, especially during such a crucial time. The lack of support is disheartening." Another added: "Harry and Meghan lied to the press and then they tried bullying them. The tactic worked."

A third declared: "Of all the stunts they have pulled, this has to be their lowest move." And a fourth wrote: "Does not surprise me one bit. They just do what they want, does not matter who they hurt as long as they are ok. Why should they care about anybody else but themselves. Everything they have ever done together has been for their own benefit, nobody else's."

Taking the Sussexes' side, however, an X user asked: "Why should they need permission to use a name though? Seems a bit ridiculous." A second concurred: "Did all the other women ask Elizabeth if they were allowed to use her name as their daughter’s middle name? Kate? Eugenie?" Whilst a third slammed Piers directly, writing: "Well you are an expert when it comes to lying."
