There is nothing more embarrassing than sitting in biology at school as your teacher begins to talk about sex education.

While most of us may remember the most important aspects of sex-ed, not everything about what goes on in the bedroom is taught in class so there will be plenty of gaps. Plus, half the time the group of giggling teenagers are distracted from soaking the information in properly.

While the majority of us will have the basics down, but it is important that we are clued up on our sexual health. Thankfully, Dr Danae Maragouthakis, from Yoxly - an Oxford-based doctor - has shared a number of penis misconceptions and facts you might not know. Thank us later.

The penis has a bone, it cannot break

Many people may think that you can 'break a penis', however the body part does not have a bone - like some other mammals. Despite this, the penis can be injured. The erectile tissue can be damaged and lead to conditions like penile fractures if there is sudden force applied to an erect penis.

Watch out for curves

Dr Danae Maragouthakis said: "Penises can naturally vary in shape and curvature. A slight bend or curve is normal for many men and doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. However, if there's a sudden change or if curvature is causing pain or difficulty, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional."

Up to half your erection is hidden

Men's penis are actually longer than they look. About 30 percent of the tissues that make up the male erection are internal, so you can't see it from the outside. Who knew...

There are three types of erection

While we all know the typical erection, you may be surprised to learn there are three types of erections.

  • Subconscious erection: This occurs in the absence of any specific physical or psychological stimulation, often during the dreaming phase of sleep
  • Reflexogenic erection: This is the result of direct stimulation of the penis
  • Psychogenic erection: This is the result of visual stimulation, including sexual fantasies.

You don't need an erection to orgasm

Dr Danae Maragouthakis explained: "While an erection is often associated with sexual arousal and orgasm, it is not a strict requirement for all individuals. Some people can experience an orgasm without a full erection, and various factors can influence sexual response."
