Members of the Royal Family have had mixed fortunes as school and this is a look at how others fared after Sarah Ferguson’s O Level results were published.

Sarah's exam results were found on a slip in a dusty old cabinet at her school. The 64-year-old was reported to have gained six O-levels at the school, where fees were about £3,000 a year – the equivalent of £21,000 a year today. But the newly uncovered document left behind at Hurst Lodge School in Ascot, where she was a weekly border, shows that the would-be Duchess gained an A in spoken English and a C in art.

She got Ds in English language, English literature and biology, which then counted as a fail. She also failed French and geography. Yet it has not held her back as Sarah went on to write the Budgie the Little Helicopter series of children’s books and topped the Sunday Times bestseller list with two Mills & Boon romance novels, Her Heart for a Compass and A Most Intriguing Lady.

King Charles

Charles went to Gordonstoun in Moray, Scotland, which was not a happy time for him as he described it as a “prison sentence”. Gordonstoun is a converted 17th century building that was also made into RAF barracks. The King followed in the footsteps of his father the late Duke of Edinburgh in going to the school that was set up in 1934.

The King once wrote in a letter while at the school: "The people in my dormitory are foul. They throw slippers all night long or hit me with pillows… Last night was hell, literal hell. I wish I could come home.” Charles got five O-levels and two A-levels - a B in history and a C in French, before going to Cambridge where he graduated with a 2:2 in history.

Queen Camilla

Camilla went to Queen’s Gate School in south Kensington and left with one O-level at 16 but it is not clear in which subject. She started to go to the school aged 10 with pupils taught a variety of life skills including cookery and flower arranging. The Queen did not do A-levels but instead went to Mon Fertile Finishing School in Tolochenaz, Switzerland and then to the Institut Britannique in Paris where she studied French.

Princess Diana

Diana did not get any O-levels although she was said to have shown a talent for music as a piano player. Her dancing ability and domestic science skills were also noted. She went first to Riddlesworth Hall in Diss, Norfolk, before going to the West Heath boarding school in Kent in 1974. Diana went on to attend the Institut Alpin Videmanette finishing school in Switzerland.

Prince Andrew

Andrew, like Charles, went to Gordonstoun in Scotland where he got six O-levels and three A-levels in English, history and politics. Unlike the king he flourished and became the “leader of the pack” but it is believed that conditions had improved by the time he was there with central heated rooms and carpets as well as hot water for showers. After leaving school Andrew joined the Britannia Royal Naval College in 1979 and trained to become a naval officer.

Prince William

In a change from tradition William was the first to go to Eton aged 13 in 1995 where he stayed as a border during the week and returned Windsor Castle at weekends.

He did well at school with 12 GCSEs and three A-levels with an A in geography, B in history or art and a C in biology. He was also keen at sport, playing football, water polo as well as swimming. Andrew went on to study geography at St Andrew’s University where he got a 2:1.

The Princess of Wales did well both academically and in sport at Marlborough College in Wiltshire. She came away with 11 GCSEs and three A-levels with As in maths and art and a B in English. She also enjoyed success at hockey and tennis at the school before going to St Andrew’s University where she got a 2:1 in history of art.

Prince Harry

The Duke of Sussex went to Eton College like his brother and came away with 11 GCSEs and two A-levels with a B in art and a D in geography. He also enjoyed playing sport at the school and was a member of the Combined Cadet Force before joining the Army rather than going to university.
