This is the horror moment a man's skeletal remains were pulled from an Amazonian river after his body was stripped to the bone by piranhas.

Boatman Odair Raash, 46, had earlier disappeared transporting cattle on the Guapore river near Costa Marques Rondonia State, Brazil. The gnawed remains of his body were found 35 kilometres (20 miles) up river by horrified locals on January 1.

In grim footage which has only just emerged Raash's body is being dragged onto sheets of tarpaulin on the river bank. Bizarrely his clothes are completely intact right down to his boots. But virtually every scrap of flesh or internal organs has been eaten down to the bone.

All that's left is the skin on his hands and a strip of hair along the back of his head. The bite marks to his body were reportedly consistent with a mass piranha attack, although some reports said that other animals may also have feasted on his flesh. Police are investigating Raash's death and are reportedly attempting to establish if the crew on his boat were drunk.

It comes after a man was eaten by piranhas after a boat crash on the same river in September last year. Joney Jose Silva da Luz, 38, was driving a boat on the Cuiabá River in Barão de Melgaço, Brazil, on September 9 when the incident happened. His body was discovered the following morning.

Two vessels collided while carrying a total of five people. Three passengers were rescued alive while two people, including Mr Silva da Luz, remained missing. His corpse was found with multiple bites from a shoal of piranhas in the river. His ravaged remains were pulled out of the water and placed on one of the rescue boats. The victim's wife was one of the three survivors.

Meanwhile, in January 2022, four bathers were killed and over 20 people injured in a spate of ferocious piranha attacks causing alarm in Paraguay. A 22-year-old man died after he was badly bitten by the predators as he swam in the Paraguay river, south of the capital Asuncion, at Itá Enramada on January 2.

His family saw him disappear from view and contacted the police leading to a search that lasted 45 minutes before his badly bitten body was found. It is unusual for piranhas to be so aggressive and yet there have been numerous attacks in the region. A 49-year-old man was also killed in the Paraguay river, in the town of Puerto Rosario, with his body found with bite wounds after he was reported missing.

Forensic examinations confirmed that he had most probably been attacked by piranhas in the water who targeted his face. Then two people where killed in the Tebicuary river, Villa Florida, in Misiones, with their bodies found with piranha bites, reported La Nacion.
