Eye-watering amount late George Michael made every day last year
The late George Michael made a staggering amount a day in 2023.
The Wham! star passed away on December 25 in 2016 aged 53. However, his hits have still continued to bring in money for his company Nobby's Hobbies Holding Limited Account. They recently filed their accounts for the last year, where they made a whopping £20 million pre-tax profit.
It meant the pop star made an eye-watering £55,000 a day thanks to his huge hits including Careless Whisper and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. Earnings from 12 months ending in March 2023 include £20.6 million in publishing income and £2.5 million in record royalties.
The Sun reports there was also an extra £60,000. In total, George's company made a gross turnover of £23,777,223 in 2023. It came in at almost two million more than 2022. The earnings were totalled before Wham! secured the 2023 Christmas Number One with their single Last Christmas.
The hit had never made the Christmas Number One spot before last year despite its huge success. It was initially beaten to the top spot in 1984 thanks to Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? The festive track by George and Andrew Ridgeley made history as the longest ever journey to make it to the top spot in time for Christmas Day, according to the Official Charts Company.
George Michael's manager says singer 'refused to be ashamed' over his sexualityBBC Radio1 DJ Jack Saunders announced the news on his show with special guest Andrew Ridgeley. Andrew of Wham revealed how George would have felt after finally landing Christmas Number One if he were still here. He said: "Last Christmas has finally ascended to the much-cherished and sought-after Official Christmas number one, which was always the main goal.
"George would be beside himself that after all of these years, we've finally obtained a Christmas number one. George said that he wrote Last Christmas with the intention of writing a Christmas number one. It's mission accomplished." And Andrew said it was a "huge disappointment" for the pair not to reach the top spot in 1984 as they believed it was "nailed on".
"Had it not been for Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?, it probably would've been number one," the 60-year-old said. "Thwarted for many years subsequent to that - the perennial bridesmaid - over recent years it seems it's become part of the fabric of Christmas for a lot of people. Christmas number one has been a long-held ambition for Yog (Michael) and I, and for the fans, too. It'll mean a lot to Wham!'s legacy - it's the crowning glory."
Last Christmas was also named the UK's third biggest song of all time with a combined lifetime total of 5.34 million chart units, the Official Charts Company said. Following his sudden death, a coroner ruled that George died of natural causes from dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle, which causes the muscle to become stretched and thin over time, which affects how blood can be pumped around the body.
