Peter Capaldi fans have said they are “hooked” on a new crime drama that has debuted with a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Doctor Who star fronts Criminal Record, a new British police series that premiered on Wednesday (January 10).

From BAFTA-nominated Indian Summers creator Paul Rutman, the Apple Original series is billed as a “powerful, character-driven drama” set in the heart of contemporary London. It touches on issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain.

In Criminal Record, an anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives at opposite stages in their career into a tug of war over a high-profile murder case. Capaldi stars as a grizzled man determined to protect his legacy, alongside The Good Wife’s Cush Jumbo as a young woman in the early stages of her career.

The Evening Standard also gave it five stars thanks to its suspenseful, intriguing and “thrilling storyline” while adding it may already be one of the best “dramas of the year.” The first episodes have been equally well received by fans and many have taken to social media to share their early reactions.
