The best music to discover in 2024

Entertainment Editor Callum Crumlish has a catalogue of top artists to choose from and has opted for alt-rock superstar Blondshell. He says: "American melancholia at its finest; she follows in the footsteps of Alanis Morisette. After her debut album last year (and a few slots on some massive festivals this year) she’s sure to have an incredible 2024."

Stephen Hurrell, Managing Editor (Affiliates), chose a band from his hometown of Liverpool as one to watch in 2024: "The Heavy North are a soulful, garage blues-style band fresh off a spectacular second album launch, and a triumphant homecoming Liverpool show featuring an entire 12-piece band. Previously featured on BBC Introducing, the band has a famous fan in actor Robert Carlyle, who has labelled the band as 'absolutely brilliant'. They're one of the most exciting bands around at the moment and never fail to hit the mark."

Completing the Northern band theme is Fashion and Beauty Editor for the Manchester Evening News, Rachel Pugh, who chose a Manchester band for her pick of 2024. She says "Slay and Bou who do drum and bass and had a huge hit last summer with 'Closer' - Slay has just been signed to RCA records so I expect he's one to watch this year."

Meanwhile, Mirror journalists picked out some big names who are set to have a big year in 2024.

Chris Burns says: "Frank Ocean last released an album in 2016 so each and every January since I go into the new year hoping that this year will finally be the year he releases that long awaited third album. However, even if Frank doesn't I can still go back and lose myself in the rich worlds of Channel Orange and Blonde any time I like, but Frank if you're reading, 2024 would be a great year to drop that new record.

"Lana Del Rey had a huge year in 2023 with the release of Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd and a headline slot at Glastonbury so if you're not familiar with the American singer/songwriter now is the time to dive into her expansive and, mightily impressive, back catalogue and discover the dreamy, hazy and dangerous world of the singer once known as the 'Gangster Nancy Sinatra'.

Laura McKenna says: "I'm super excited to see the Foo' Fighters as they return to London as part of their Everything or Nothing At All tour in June. Dave Grohl continues to be the nicest man in rock, and every one of those 80,000 fans at the London Stadium knows it. I'll also be taking a trip back to my youth as I gently rock along to the 90s icons that are the Smashing Pumpkins, with a bonus appearance from fellow Indie legends Weezer, as well as the chance to scream Mr Brightside at the top of my lungs with a mid-summer outing to catch The Killers at the O2."
