The triple amputee who Prince Harry labelled a hero says he had a set of his prosthetic legs stolen after his car was broken into.

Outraged Mark Ormrod MBE shared the news on social media after callous criminals raided his vehicle even though it was parked in a disabled bay. The former Marine from Plymouth, Devon, said a bag full of gym clothes was also snatched last night and hopes those responsible can be caught.

He wrote on Twitter following the devastating discovery: "Not the best start to my day!!! Had my car broken into last night. They stole a bag full of sweaty gym clothes, another bag with my JiuJitsu Gi in and what’s really inconvenient is they took a set of my prosthetic legs!

"Despite having three cameras pointing at my car I was told by the staff at the hotel that they couldn’t see any activity as the view to my car was blocked by another car (might be time to reposition those cameras )."The sad thing is to think that someone would break into a car parked in a disabled parking space and steal equipment someone needs to live independently and not even care."

The brave soldier stuck two fingers up to the Taliban by insisting they did him a favour when they blew him up. He was the first triple amputee of the 13-year Afghan conflict and suffered such devastating wounds he was not expected to survive.

But the defiant dad of three said stepping on the mine in Helmand Province in 2007 did not destroy him. He told the Sunday People: “The Taliban did me a favour because it set my life on a path I could never have dreamed of. “Back in the beginning when I lost my limbs and almost my life, I wanted to die. I wanted someone to put a gun to my head to put me out of my misery."

After leaving the Royal Marines in July 2010, he ran 3,530 miles across America on his prosthetic blades to raise money for military charities. Then in 2011 Mark, who already had daughter Kezia from a previous relationship, became a dad again with the arrival of son Mason. By that point, he had some very high profile support.

Prince Harry penned a heartfelt letter to Mark thanking him for his decade of service to the Royal Marines Charity after the war hero announced he was to pursue other causes and spend more time with his family. Mark became a familiar figure in the UK for his approach of facing his challenges head-on and rallying people with disabilities.

He told PlymouthLive two years ago: "My life seems to work in blocks of ten years. I was in the Royal Marines for ten years and now I've been in the charity for ten years. My wife got a new job last year and it has quick progression. That, as well as homeschooling the children while both of us work full-time. I felt naturally it was time to step down and let Becky do her thing! I'm in a good place, I'm pleased with what I've done, I just decided it was a good time [to step down]."

Harry's correspondence, dated February 2 2021, says: "Dear Mark, I heard the news that you are stepping back from your role at the Royal Marines Charity and wanted to send you my warmest congratulations on all that you've achieved in your time there. In this role you've given another incredible 10 years of service to the Royal Marines community.

"Not only through the invaluable welfare support you've been integral in delivering to individuals and their families but also by the inspirational example you set on a daily basis, challenging the idea that disability defines what's possible and encouraging others facing similar experiences.

"It's fantastic to know you will remain connected as a charity ambassador and I very much look forward to seeing what the next chapter brings for you - I have no doubt there will be great things! Meghan and I send you, Becky and your family our very best wishes for the year ahead and beyond."
