Giovanni Pernice has broken his silence to thank Debbie McGee after she backed him in the clash over his training methods.

His former Strictly dance partner Debbie, 65, spoke out after Amanda Abbington, 51, alleged she had PTSD since being paired with him on last year’s series, which she quit for personal reasons.

Debbie, a 2017 finalist, posted a picture of the them, writing: “Happy memories. Giovanni and I had the best of times on Strictly.” To which Giovanni, 33, remarked simply: “Love you... thank you”.

His co-stars are also thought to be rallying behind him. A source said: “There is a general feeling that the criticism is grossly unfair.” The Mirror told yesterday how the BBC said it has not received any formal complaints from any of his previous dance partners and was puzzled after Amanda asked to see rehearsal footage for a potential legal claim.

BBC sources accept while there have been “moans” about his perfectionism, his conduct has never warranted an investigation. A BBC spokesman said: “There is a constant dialogue between the senior production team and contestants to ensure that any concerns are addressed swiftly. Strictly has a proud track record as a joyful experience where robust support and assistance is always made available at every stage of the production."

Debbie, whose magician husband Paul Daniels died in 2016, has said how she had a “really good, loving friendship” with Giovanni and how the show had changed her life for the better. She said: “Up until then, 90% of people just thought I was Paul’s assistant and an appendage to him. People suddenly realised there was more to me. I started being offered work that just wouldn’t have happened before.” Giovanni had previously called their partnership as “one of the most beautiful experiences of my life”.
