Giovanni Pernice 'being philosophical' as BBC breaks silence on footage demands

Giovanni Pernice has the current drama of his Strictly feud with Amanda Abbington on his mind - claims body language expert Judi James.

The 33-year-old professional dancer has been dragged into headlines in recent days after 2023 celebrity dance partner Amanda, 51, explosively demanded that the BBC hand over all footage of them rehearsing together as she allegedly mulls legal advice.

The pair were partners on the most recent season of Strictly - but dramatically withdrew after week five, with Amanda saying she needed to do so due to medical reasons. The BBC broke their silence on Amanda's reported demands on Monday night.

For weeks before their exit, rumours had swirled that the pair had clashed behind-the-scenes. And now news that Sherlock actress Amanda is considering some kind of legal action has put a fresh spotlight on their strained friendship.

Photographers captured photos of Giovanni on Monday as he took a break from rehearsals - with the dance star dressed all in black and clutching a cigarette. While the headlines around him may be concerning, Judi says he shows signs of being in an upbeat mental state, rather than allowing the drama to weigh heavily on him.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, and reviewing the photos of the BBC star with his colleagues, Judi said: "Every studio has a small group of smokers gathered outside in the break and Giovanni’s body language looks little different from anyone else might do, standing out in the cold having a chat."

She explains further: "His facial expression appears to show a state of reasonable good humour as though he is being philosophical about the current headlines, but there is no scowling or hunching to suggest he’s suffering from any desire to hide or any suppressed anger. His eyes are slightly narrowed but wrinkled at the outer edges to suggest a faint eye smile and the puckering around his mouth and the slight curls at the corner suggest he’s being stoic rather than anxious. His hand is stuffed in his pocket, but in the freezing weather that’s likely to be caused by the chill rather than a desire to hide."

Juid continues: "As he speaks to the rest of the group he holds one hand out in a part shrug gesture that could hint at feelings of confusion if he were talking about the current claims. His brow is also furrowed at this point but not in a frown, more a gesture of surprise."

She adds: "There does seem to be a small tongue-poke gesture as he looks towards the camera and this could be a signal of rejection." Giovanni is said to have been left surprised by the actions Amanda is taking against Strictly.

A source told The Sun over the weekend: "There is a feeling that the recordings will lift the lid on what really goes on behind the scenes on Strictly. Things in rehearsals can become very tense." The source went on to say that Giovanni has the tendency to be "incredibly full-on" as he is a "perfectionist" by nature. They added: “He has had support from producers over what has happened recently and they are behind him.”

Amanda reportedly confided in those close to her that she had been left "broken and saddened" by her experience on Strictly and has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following her time on the show. The source claimed that it has taken the actress months to get over her time on the show as it was a "real shock", considering how excited she was to join last year's line-up.
