Larian Studios owner and CEO Swen Vincke has offered fans a cheeky hint about what’s to come from the developer following Baldur’s Gate 3’s immense success.

Although we stand five months out from when Baldur’s Gate 3 initially released on PC, it feels like we’re still in its afterglow. The beloved fantasy RPG has since released on PS5 and Xbox – despite some rocky ongoing save issues on the latter – yet already developer Larian Studios is thinking about future projects. It makes sense, given that a Baldur’s Gate 3 expansion is yet to be officially confirmed, and the studio was already generous in adding a meaty epilogue to the base game in Patch 5.

As part of a recent Twitter thread, Larian Studios head, Swen Vincke, revealed that the team’s next game is already being worked on; at least in the earliest conceptual stages. “After 4 months of rewriting and rewriting and abandoning ideas and then revisiting them, finally figured out what act 1 on this thing I've been working on needs to be,” he said. Vincke was swift to mention that it wasn't a “teaser for an announcement” any time soon, but that he was excited about the way things were progressing.

Currently it’s unknown if this future project Vincke is referring to will indeed end up being another adventure set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, or something else entirely. Prior to Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s most renowned series was Divinity: Original Sin, of course, which players tend to consider as the studio’s unofficial pitch for taking up the Baldur’s Gate reins; not to mention they are respected isometric RPGs in their own right.

Mightier than the sword

Anyone who’s played Baldur’s Gate 3 will know that Act 1 alone is comparable in size to a lot of other AAA games released today – it could easily take you up to 60 hours by itself. That Vincke has already let players know he has scoped out the story for its follow-up is extremely exciting, therefore, as is the fact it could be of a similar scale. If anything else, it lets us know that Larian Studios has no intention of pumping the brakes any time soon.

Typically with a game as monumentally well received as Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s assumed that DLC or an expansion would come next. Sadly, nowhere in the thread does Vincke refer to the project he is currently working on in any explicit detail. The last time he spoke about Larian Studios’ future was in an IGN interview, where he said “we’re definitely gonna get back” to the Divinity: Original Sin universe.

Whether the studio’s next game does end up being Baldur’s Gate 4 or another game set in the Divinity: Original Sin universe, one thing is for certain: fans of 2023’s GOTY winner will be waiting with bated breath for their first chance to play.
