With awards season kicking off in style with the 2024 Golden Globes there is an array of red carpet appearances ahead for Hollywood's finest as they celebrate showbusiness.

All eyes will now look to the grand finale of the season with The Oscars 96th annual ceremony scheduled for Sunday March 10 2024 being known as the biggest night for Hollywood, but one big question movie fans may have is just what is the difference between The Golden Globes and The Oscars.

Also known as The Academy Awards the Oscars are all about those big screen moments and movie theatre experiences you can't get anywhere else. The ceremony is solely dedicated to the film industry in everything from big Hollywood blockbusters to independent productions and animations. If it's related to the movies, the Oscars has it covered in one of their extensive categories.

While The Golden Globes focus on film, they also, like the Emmys, recognise television talent, meaning a broader spectrum of famous faces are often given significance by the bash. The Golden Globes also take a less serious approach to things than The Oscars which is generally billed as a more straight-laced event with it's renowned afterparties then picking up the ante.

In contrast celebs can expect a big celebration from the get go with over 75,000 glasses of free Champagne dished out at every ceremony. The boozy bash has created some iconic moments as a result - including when renowned movie maker Quentin Tarantino spat out his mouthful of champers upon hearing that Ben Affleck had been named as Best Director in 2013.

Another factor that sets the two awards ceremonies apart is how the winners are picked. The Golden Globes have 199 voters making all the big decisions - thats 96 members of the HFPA and 103 international non-members all casting their vote.

The voters are all entertainment journalists and they represent 62 countries in the choices they make, with them making up one of the most diverse voting boards out there, with a 51% female and 51.8% racially and ethnically diverse composition. The Golden Globes also don't operate a majority voting system, instead opting for a ranked choice method to determine the winners.

Meanwhile the Oscars has 7000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences helping to create the final moments you see as the winners collect their prize. The Academy has 17 different branches covering each area of the movie making business from soundtracks and cinematography to the acting itself. Each member of every branch provide their top five choices from their field to create the nominees list. Then all 7000 members cast their votes for their winner in each category.
