Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has received a huge promotion - and he could be replaced on the ITV soap.

Iain has been given the new role of Executive Producer for Continuing Drama and he will now be responsible for leading the creative teams on both Coronation Street and Emmerdale. As a result, he could be replaced as the executive producer for the Manchester based soap, just a few months after Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson stood down.

Speaking about his new role, Iain - who has led multiple big storylines for Corrie in the last few years - said: "I am beyond delighted to be stewarding two shows that I - along with the whole nation - absolutely love. They hold such a central role in viewers’ lives and working with the immensely talented teams on either side of the Pennines to cement their position as the best soaps on the telly will be a massive thrill and a privilege. I have been honing my skills in producer roles for the past decade and I am brimming with ideas for what the next chapter on each show will look like - I can’t wait to get started!"

During his time on Corrie, Iain has led a string of huge storylines including Sinead Tinker's cancer diagnosis and tragic death as well as the arrival of the Bailey family. He was also behind the heartbreaking storyline which saw Nina and Seb attacked in a viscious hate crime, as well as Abi's struggle with drink and drugs and Geoff's coercive control of Yasmeen.

He has been on the soap through the arrival of Evelyn Plummer and her daughter - and Tyrone's real mother - Cassie Plummer, as well as Sarah Platt and Damon's Hay steamy affair. The acid attack on Ryan and Daisy by evil stalker Justin won the soap multiple awards, whilst Iain has also been leading the soap during the terrifying reign of terror of evil serial killer Stephen Reid.

His appointment comes several months after Jane Hudson stepped down as executive producer for Emmerdale.

Back in August, she shared: "I’ve had a wonderful time at Emmerdale and feel very lucky to have spent the last five years working alongside such a hardworking and talented team. I’m extremely proud of what we‘ve achieved both on and off screen, especially during the pandemic when we all pulled together to make sure we never went off air.

"As hard as it is to say goodbye to my fictional family of villagers, I can’t wait to have weekends back with my real family. But mostly, I can’t wait to be an Emmerdale viewer again and have no idea what’s coming next!"
