Joey Barton claims his crusade against women in men's football is his "duty" to his great grandfather and "thousands of men like him" who fought in the First World War.

Barton, 41, has launched a series of misogynistic attacks against the involvement of women, particularly as pundits and commentators, in the men's game since he was sacked by Bristol Rovers in October. His rants on X seem to be getting more extreme by the day.

The former Premier League midfielder angered thousands of football fans by comparing pundit Eni Aluko and commentator Lucy Ward to serial killers Fred and Rose West. ITV, who employ Aluko and Ward, described Barton's comments as "contemptible and shameful".

Barton's vile tirade took another twist on Monday morning when he wrote on X: "I have a great grandfather who was gassed at Ypres in 1915. He received a military medal for bravery later in that war. Patrick Stanton is his name. Look up his citation if you choose.

"I have a duty to him. And the hundreds of thousands of men like him. Those who gave their lives, so you could have yours. I won’t stand idly by and let you tear down this great country. It’s not perfect but it’s definitely better than most places on this Earth."

Social media users were left perplexed by Barton's take. One wrote: "Let's see - great grandfather fights heroically against evil for his country in a world war, great grandson whines about women commentators. He would be proud of you carrying on his legacy."

Another added: "Many of us have had grandparents and parents who have fought and died (in wars) and they (would) be ashamed of you and the way you weaponise their sacrifice for your own miserable ends. For shame on you!"

Barton's campaign against women in men's football coincides with the launch of a new podcast. Many people believe his extreme rants, which are riddled with contradictions, are part of a campaign to keep him in the public eye.

Gary Neville is among those to criticise Barton on social media. After ITV released a statement against Barton, Neville added: "Well done ITV. It’s gone too far this and mentioning serial killers is quite simply incredible.

"My daughters have watched Salford City with me for 10 years and like to comment on football, my mum was kicked out of the football team (boys in the 1960's) and stopped playing due to misogyny, my sister struggled for funding for her sport for years and my brother was mocked when he took over the England women’s team.

"I come from a family that has fought these issues for years and I’ve witnessed it first hand. All this does is just discourage and it’s not the way forward. It’s bloody hard work for women to succeed in sport and media as it is without this stuff."
