Antiques Roadshow guests speechless at £5 charity shop find's astonishing value

Antiques Roadshow was full of incredible finds on Sunday night as two guests learnt the astonishing value of their £5 charity shop find.

During the latest episode, which was filmed in Pollok Country Park, Glasgow, the duo brought along their Dorothy Steel painting, which they had purchased 20 years ago.

They had spotted it in a charity shop but knew straightaway that it was a quality painting, joking that the taxi fare to take it home cost more than the £5 painting itself.

Expert, Frances Christie, admitted: "In my opinion, this is probably one of the best Steel's I've ever seen." Frances revealed that at auction it would probably go for between £3,000 to £5,000.

The guests were left stunned, admitting: "Oh my goodness!" They added afterwards: "I can't think of any better fivers that I've spent... I can't imagine getting more value for money, that's for sure!" While the other guest added: "I'm very pleased, obviously, to hear that it's you know... it's worth money. But it's worth a lot more than that to me."

Elsewhere on the show, one guest wanted a family-inherited telescope valued. He said: "It belonged to William Lassell, made by William Lassell we think, who was an astronomer born in 1799. He is my great-grandfather's great-grandfather."

The expert was left seriously impressed by the item, revealing: "The mere fact that these belonged to such a famous astronomer, and, let's face it, he's got so many letters after his name. He wrote so many papers and of course he was very big in the Royal Astronomical Society as well.

"I think your items here are worth £20,000!" The guest was quick to reply with: "Oh, wow!", before adding: "Oh wow, I'm very surprised about that! I thought it would be an absolute fraction of that."

The expert added: "It's just, it builds up into this beautiful story about a brewer who made incredible discoveries. He made a place for himself in astronomical history" to which the guest said: "Thank you for all your help, that's very fascinating, thank you!"

Also on the show, Antiques Roadshow expert Gordon Foster admitted he was 'gobsmacked' as he valued one guest's 'Scottish treasure' with an incredible history at £150,000, leaving the audience gasping.
