Ousted Masked Singer contestant Alexander Armstrong says he has wanted to be on the show for years.

Alexander, unmasked as Chicken Caesar on Saturday, said: “I’ve been longing to do it. I mean, every year, I’m always getting messages saying: ‘Are you so and so...’ And I say: ‘Oh, maybe.”’

He added: “I’ve loved it.” Alexander also admitted: “The costume just made me laugh, that and coming on prime time TV dressed as a cock.”

Being on the wacky ITV1 show is liberating for its stars too, Alexander said. He explained: “The fact you don’t have to go to makeup, you don’t have to shave, no one has to see you. You don’t have to say anything. It’s quite nice not saying anything!”

Comedian, actor and game show presenter Alexander sang the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Under the Bridge on Saturday.

The judging panel – Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Rita Ora – rated him worse than Bubble Tea and Owl in a sing-off. But Jonathan did concede he made “a very regal chicken”.

Despite appearing on a top-tier TV show – Saturday’s was watched by 5 million people – Alexander, 53, says his children remain unimpressed by his fame. The presenter of game show Pointless said: “They’re fabulously uninterested in my TV career. It’ll just be yet another thing that they’ll go, ‘Oh, OK’.”
