Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has shared an update on stricken forward Gabriel Jesus after his latest injury blow.

The Brazilian forward pulled out of Arsenal's squad just hours before their FA Cup showdown with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners missed a huge host of presentable chances in his absence and in turn, have been dumped out of the competition as the Reds ran out 2-0 winners on the night.

An own goal from Jakub Kiwior was followed by a late Luis Diaz strike meant Arsenal's miserable run in the FA Cup since winning it in 2020 continues. Jesus' absence was certainly sorely felt, with the Gunners wasting a number of glorious opportunities in both halves.

There is hope that Jesus' latest problem is not serious but it is already the third separate issue that he has sustained this season. Speaking after Arsenal's clash with Liverpool, Arteta said: "He had some pain in his knee. We have done a scan that shows something."

The Gunners boss was pressed for comment on whether there's any danger that Jesus' injury could be worse than first feared, but Arteta kept his cards close to his chest as he added: "Hopefully not." The performance against Liverpool suggests Arsenal need him back sooner rather than later given their woes in front of goal.

There has long been speculation suggesting that Arteta could look to sign attacking reinforcements this month, with Brentford's Ivan Toney believed to be the main target as things stand. Inevitably, the Arsenal manager was faced with questions over the January transfer window after the game.

"One thing is what we need and another is what we can do," Arteta added. "What we can do is stick behind those players and make sure we stick behind those players."

The Spaniard was also asked how he felt about the fans' desire to see a new attacker signed and replied with a passionate plea of his own. "What I beg from the supporters is that they are behind the team. Stick behind the team, they are incredibly good. They deserve the support with their attitude."

Arsenal are not in action again until January 20th, when they welcome Crystal Palace to the Emirates in the Premier League. A win is essential as the Gunners look to revive a season that is threatening to derail.
