TV star feared he'd die after suffering brutal machete attack on holiday

TV star Dom Joly once feared for his life after he was attacked by locals in the Congo who wielded a machete during his research for a book on monsters.

The 56 year old TV personality, who appeared on I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2010, said he had travelled alone to the Congo in search of a monster in the northern part of the country. Ahead of his upcoming tour titled Dom Joly: The Conspiracy Tour 2024, he said in a recent interview "One of my most scary moments was when I went to the Congo for a book I wrote about monsters. " He added: "I was 'hunting' monsters, and I tried to get to a lake in northern Congo, called Lake Tele. I had to fly there and take a canoe trip for three days to get to a village where they had to then get me access to this lake."

He told the Daily Star: "I spent all day negotiating this access and then they said yes, and I said, 'Great. Can we crack on?' And they said, 'No, we have to have a party'. And they drank just terrible like jungle Special Brew. I mean, it was f***ing awful. And anyway, they all got paralytic and everyone got really violent."

He continued: "The guy that was supposed to take me the next day, attacked me with a machete and was tied to a tree. And normally in a story like this, I'd say, you know, so I went alone. But I just thought I'm out of my depth here so literally when they all passed out, I just got f***ed off. I was on my own as it was for my book, I didn't have a TV crew with me or anything."

Dom's tour will be based on his latest book The Conspiracy Tourist and will kick off in February, running until 28 March. Back in March 2021 viewers were left stunned as Dom Joly managed to win £50,000 after the Chasers stumbled on a question about Phil Mitchell.

The comedian was on Beat The Chasers after previously appearing on The Chase against the Shaun Wallace, aka Dark Destroyer in 2012. Dom had won £10,000 on the cash builder, but decided to go for the higher offer of £89,000 and unfortunately crashed out of the competition.

On his second attempt, Dom got two questions correct out of five and went for the highest offer again of £50,000 against five Chasers. It seemed as though both the Beast and the Vixen were close to answering the question but the Beast was only able to remember Steve McFadden's last name, making them struggle for the rest of their time under the spotlight.

Dom was stunned when he won £50,000 for charity, leaving 30 seconds left on the clock and fans were shocked as they rushed to Twitter to comment. One person wrote: "Absolutely love the Chasers being stumped by a question about Phil Mitchell #BeatTheChasers." Another person said: "@domjoly absolute scenes on #beatthechasers." Meanwhile a third added: "The Chasers mullered there #BeatTheChasers."
