Cat found dumped in bag with heartbreaking note to 'take me and love me'
A cat was spotted in a bag on a park bench in East London having been left there by its owner. It was found alongside a note reading 'love me' on December 24.
The cat was identified at approximately 3:45pm on Christmas Eve in Barking Park by a family who saw two men leaving a carrier on a bench. They noticed that the bag was moving and realised there was a cat inside, MyLondon reports.
There was a note accompanying the feline, which said: ‘"Hello I’m Mila. I am one- years-old turning two on February 17, 2024. My owner is going back to university and won’t be able to take me with her. Take me in and love me like my owner did. Thank you 24/12/23."
Mila is black and has a purple and yellow collar featuring a bell. This was later removed by her finders because it was very tight. She was not microchipped and the family who saw her rang the RSPCA, where she remains in their care.
The animal rescue officer Lee Ricketts is investigating. He said: “The cat was very lucky to be found when she was. It was getting dark and it was unlikely that there would be much footfall in the park for the rest of the evening or on Christmas Day.
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge him"She could have been attacked by a dog or a fox, and the cold weather could have been really dangerous, as well as having no food or water in the carrier. She was taken to Finsbury Park Animal Hospital for a check up, and is now at an RSPCA branch.
"It’s so sad that rather than taking her to a place of safety, she was simply abandoned in a park during a very quiet period. Shockingly, abandonment reports to the RSPCA are at a three-year high - highlighting why we are urging people to join the winter rescue and help us reach more animals like this poor cat. If anyone knows who those two men were or the cat’s previous owner, please contact us so we can investigate further.”
The welfare's charity winter campaign revealed that it received 20,995 reports about an animal being abandoned in 2023, which is more than all three previous years. It's thought this is related to the rising cost of living, but help and advice can be found on the RSPCA website here.
Members of the public with information are urged to contact the RSPCA's appeals line on 0300 123 8018, and quote the reference 01200992. At the moment, Mila is being looked after at an RSPCA branch and will be rehomed soon.
From June 10, 2024, there is new legislation which makes is a legal requirement to microchip pet cats in England, after they reach 20 weeks of age. Owners will have to keep their contact details up-to-date on a pet microchipping database.
