The Royal Family have secret code names for one another - and a very good reason for using them.

The Firm, including the late Queen, King Charles and Camilla, were are known to use pseudonyms for security reasons - but sometimes they're for a bit of fun, too. They aren't the only royals to follow that path, and Kate Middleton once accidentally let her one slip out.

While Prince William was working as a search and rescue pilot in Wales, Kate once mentioned their "secret" names - and they both have the same initials. When on holiday, Kate and William reportedly use them to keep a low profile - the Prince is known as Danny Collins, while Kate often goes by the name Daphne Clark.

Both names share the initials DC, representing Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – the pair's royal titles before they became Prince and Princess of Wales. And it's not the only name Kate uses when she's in a tricky spot. There was an awkward moment when she was previously shopping for a wetsuit - but forgot her purse.

When the shop owner, Dave Buckland, asked for her name to reserve the item, she responded: "Mrs Cambridge." A friend later told the Mail on Sunday: "He was looking straight at her and actually commented that it was quite an unusual surname. He hadn't a clue who she was. She just smiled and said she'd be back. He hasn't lived it down since."

Other monikers are clearly quite a common thing and they all have nicknames. William's main one in the family seems to be Willy, which Prince Harry confirmed in his bombshell memoir Spare. Kate is reported to have previously referred to William as "Big Willy" in the early days of their relationship back after they met at the University of St. Andrew's, where they both studied. However, in more recent years of their marriage, she is said to call her husband "Prince Baldy" as he has lost his hair.

Kate's childhood nickname was revealed during a visit back to one of the Berkshire schools she attended when she was a child: Squeak. "I was nicknamed Squeak just like my guinea pig," she admitted. "There was one called Pip and one called Squeak because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak".

During the very early years of their romantic relationship, Charles and Camilla are said to have begun referring to each other as "Fred" and "Gladys", which is thought to be a nod to an old BBC radio show. Prince Harry has admitted to having a wealth of nicknames over the years. In his memoir Spare, he explained that he has been called "Spike" because of a hairstyle he rocked in his teens. He also said his brother's nickname for him was "Harold" and he had also been referred to as "Baz", "Haz", and "Scrawny".
