The Masked Singer fans figure out Maypole's identity and it's 'biggest star yet'

Fans of The Masked Singer are convinced that they have uncovered who Maypole is, and if they are correct then they could be the biggest star the ITV show has had.

The singing competition saw Maypole make their first appearance with the character hinting at their identity by telling viewers: "The audience is watching so I'll give it the sell, it's something I learnt since the year of Orwell." This led to the show's judges going down the path of thinking that celebrities had seen a major life event in 1984, which is the title of George Orwell's celebrated dystopian novel.

ITV viewers are convinced they know who is Maypole (ITV)

One pop star who was born in 1984 was Katy Perry and viewers are convinced that the chart-topping US singer is under the Maypole costume and with nine number one's in her back catalogue, she could be a huge coup for the ITV show, if indeed it is her.

Viewers shared their thoughts as to who it might be on social media, commenting on Instagram: "Katy Perry, born 1984." Another felt that this was too obvious based upon the clue given but the original poster came back at them and said: "I don’t think so, all of the other possibilities are born after 1984, so it can’t be them, myself I’ve not heard of her recently so she could have been doing this."

Another pop star under the microscope is The Masked Singer judge Rita Ora, who is missing from this episode. Rita has been sharing snaps of her break at a New Zealand villa but there are some who believe that she could have fitted in the show around her busy schedule.

The hit show recently returned with Joel Dommett at the helm as the panel made up of Jonathan Ross, comedian Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall and singer Rita Ora. Judge Mo joked it could be co-star Rita Ora after she was missing from the episode. Taking to X, one viewer said: "Maypole sounds like Rita Ora!!" a second said: "Lol if Maypole is Rita Ora." A third fan added: "Maypole is Rita lol," as another asked: "Is Rita Ora doing a Nick Cannon and taking part as Maypole like he did in the US version?"

Maypole is up against Cricket, Weather, Bigfoot, Egg, Rat, Air Fryer, Bubble Tea, Owl, Piranha, Eiffel Tower and Chicken Caesar. Host Joel Dommett couldn’t wait for the show to start and previously said: "Honestly, they are the best costumes ever. If they don’t make you smile, well, get out! Air Fryer is unbelievably silly. It's so liberating to be a part of a show where first of all, people really enjoy it and also from my point of view, any idea I have, it's fair game. Even when it comes to the suits!"
