Amazing moment family cat saves terrified dog from pair of attacking coyotes

A heroic family cat risked its life to save a small dog from a pair of attacking coyotes.

The dramatic animal rescue was captured on a surveillance camera by resident Lane Dyer, owner of the small dog who came within seconds of death. Describing how the incident unfolded, Dyer told how she had let Oakley the dog out of the house to do their business.

As Dyer dealt with another two dogs in the house, he soon heard a commotion outside before Oakley suddenly bolted through the front door of their Edmond, Oklahoma, home and ran upstairs yelping. Dyer explained how his Havanese pup had been badly injured and was bleeding heavily.

Dyer and his wife rushed Oakley to the hospital with a cut to her chest and side of her body. Dyer told Fox Digital how they had "no idea what happened" before they pulled up doorcam footage on the journey to the veterinarian.

The incredible footage showed Binx, the couple's black cat, jump into action as she hissed and pounced at the coyotes in a bid to rescue her furry friend. Dyer added: "And once she got on the ground, she made a lot of noise, hissing — and pounced at the coyotes. Never in a million years would I have expected a cat to do that."

Lifesaver Binx joined the family as a stray cat who began visiting the Dyers’ yard when she was just weeks old. When the family began feeding her, she stuck around. Dyer added: "We’ve tried to bring her inside, but she has no interest in being an indoor cat.

"She likes the elements, and I’m sure she’s been in a lot of situations where she’s had to defend herself. She lives in our backyard." The family told how it was the first time one of their pets had been attacked by a coyote in their yard.

The Dyer family are now warning other pet owners to be aware of coyotes preying on their small animals. Lane Dyer added: "We sometimes hear them howling in the evenings, but never that close."

He told people to "not take coyotes for granted", adding: "They hunt and prey on small targets and have the ability to attack unannounced." Images after the attack showed Oakley with a red cast on his leg as he recovers from his nightmare ordeal.
