Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for plotting her mother's murder, has now shared her side of the story following her release.

The 32-year-old sat down with Good Morning America host Deborah Roberts to talk about her new docuseries, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, which is airing this week on LifeTime TV. During the interview, Gypsy insisted she doesn't believe her mother was a "monster" despite suffering years of abuse from her.

She explained: "She had a lot of demons herself that she was struggling with. I didn't want her dead. I just wanted out of my situation and I thought that that was the only way out."

Gypsy then explained why she's choosing now to speak out: "I share my story to be a cautionary tale so that the next person that might be in a situation like mine, they don't take the route that I did." She also shared her feelings about being released from prison.

"You don't realise how much you're restricted in prison," she confessed. "I felt like I was in a black-and-white world and I'd just stepped into Technicolour. It was amazing." Host Deborah described how Gypsy's world "shifted" during her time behind bars.

Gypsy was shown photos of herself with her mum, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. She said: "I don't even associate with that little girl anymore," and confessed she no longer recognises her younger self.

Her case gained widespread attention after she was jailed for 10 years in 2015. She had persuaded her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her mum, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. He agreed to the brutal attack after Gypsy's mum made her believe she was seriously ill, forcing her to use a wheelchair and be fed through a tube.

Before her mum's murder, Gypsy got hooked on painkillers. She said: "This is really hard to talk about because it took me down a really dark path, but I felt like it was my only way to cope for a time." She admitted to being high when she planned her mother's death, but didn't blame drugs for her actions. Gypsy has been clean for four years.

After seven years in jail, Gypsy was freed from Chillicothe Correctional Centre in Missouri, on December 28. Her release came three years early after she was granted parole. While Gypsy is free, Nicholas remains in prison for his part in Clauddine's death, serving a life sentence.

Gypsy spoke about Nicholas' life sentence, saying: "I'm sure we both have a lot of regrets. All I can really say is that I did my time, he's doing his time for his part and I wish him well on his journey."

Her new show, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, will be on TV on January 5, 6 and 7. Even though there have been lots of shows about her mum Clauddine's murder, like The Act on Hulu and Mommy Dead and Dearest, Gypsy said she doesn't want to be famous. She explained: "I would say that I think I'm infamous and then I came out famous." Gypsy also shared: "I'm a very shy person."
