Another gaming handheld could be on its way from MSI, but the device will need to pack a big punch to infiltrate an already oversaturated market.

In 2023, we saw some of the best gaming handhelds hit the market, with the top spots being taken by the likes of the Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck OLED. We also saw some more catastrophic attempts such as the Logitech G Cloud and PlayStation Portal – and now MSI might be throwing its hat in the ring, as suggested by a new teaser it shared on Instagram.

In a new (but intentionally very poorly lit) video posted on the @msigaming account over on Twitter you can make out the silhouette of what resembles a gaming handheld, with two circles of RGB around what you'd expect to be the joysticks on the device. There are then flashes of different close-ups of the product, likely being the fan grates on the top and back of the device.

The video closes out with a black screen that reads "Coming Soon" followed by "MSIxCES2024". This couldn't make it any clearer that we'll be seeing this new device revealed at CES next week.

Intel Gaming then replied to the tweet, indicating a possible partnership that would make this one of the first gaming handhelds to feature an Intel chip. This could really set the device apart from others on the market, which mainly feature AMD APUs, such as the Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck.

With how popular gaming handhelds have been in recent years, it makes sense that MSI will be releasing its version. However, entering a market that is already beginning to feel oversaturated this late in the game feels like a mistake.

Second mouse gets the cheese

2023 saw the launch of such a wide range of gaming handhelds, that it feels like there's already something out there for everyone. If you're after a budget-friendly device, then the Steam Deck is likely for you. If you want something to run AAA titles then the Asus ROG Ally does that fantastically. Not fussed about accessing PC games, then the Nintendo Switch is a great option. The list could go on and on.

MSI trying to get its hands on a piece of the handheld pie feels like a bit of a late and desperate attempt as of yet. I don't even need to remind you of the mess that has been the Lenovo Legion Go, a device I could tell was coming in too late weeks before it even released. After multiple delays due to being rushed, the Lenovo Legion Go finally hit the market and Lenovo has clearly overpromised.

Despite MSI not giving away too much about its potential new handheld yet, it has to do everything perfectly for this device to make an impact in the space. Given that this device could be coming years after the release of the Steam Deck, and over half a year after the Asus ROG Ally, MSI really has had time on its side to iron out any issues with its handheld. Let's hope taking the extra time to release its device pays off rather than bites them in the backside.
