A bungling burglar who launched himself into a supermarket from the roof left a trail of destruction when the ceiling suddenly collapsed as he attempted to escape from the hole he'd created.

Chaotic Maksyn Wojs filled a bag with heavy bottles of spirits and tried to climb back up but disaster struck when the roof repeatedly fell down on top of him. After failing miserably, he smashed his way through the Morrisons Daily front window in a bid to flee. He did over £5,000 worth of damage but was soon brought to justice.

Following a second burglary, he was arrested after being found living in a tent in a garden, Hull Crown Court heard. Wojs, 23, of no fixed address but from Hull, admitted two offences of burglary and others of fraud. He also pleaded guilty to having no insurance and driving with no licence.

Harry Bradford, prosecuting, said that the alarm was activated at the store at 2.50am on October 24. CCTV pictures were remotely accessed and they showed that a ceiling in the store had collapsed onto the tills area. Wojs had entered the store through the roof and a ceiling above the tills area. He had a dark scarf across his face and he was wearing blue Latex gloves, HullLive report.

"He went behind the tills and filled a carrier bag full of alcohol," said Mr Bradford. "Once the bag was full, he returned to the till area and attempted to escape through the collapsed ceiling. He tried to do this by climbing on top of a till and reaching up towards the ceiling in a doomed attempt to haul himself up. However, this repeatedly collapsed due to his weight," added Mr Bradford. Considerable damage was caused before Wojs discarded the bag of alcohol and some of the bottles shattered.

In a separate burglary, Wojs arrived by bicycle at a house in the city, and broke in through a sliding patio door. The next day, the occupier found that a purse containing £40 and three bank cards was missing as well as a laptop, its bag, some headphones and a wood chipper.

A five-door black Audi car, valued at £15,000, was missing from the driveway. The same morning, Wojs used a bank card at Jags Orchard store to buy goods, valued at £27.10. Wojs was identified from CCTV pictures and he was arrested the same day in Limedane, Orchard Park estate, where he had been living in a tent in a garden.

While he was being taken to Clough Road police station, he said: "It's the first time I have done a house. It didn't feel nice." His previous convictions included being given a suspended prison sentence in 2022 for commercial burglary. "For most of his life, he has had to battle with that addiction. He is capable of living a social lifestyle. He just needs to address his drug addiction otherwise he will be spending longer and longer in a custodial setting."

Judge John Thackray KC said that Wojs had told police that the burglary "didn't feel nice" when he committed the offence. "It felt very much worse for your victims, who must have been horrified to find that you had entered their property before making off in the family motor vehicle," said Judge Thackray. Wojs, who was already in custody on remand, was jailed for two years and four months.
