Scottie Scheffler has opened up on his disappointing Ryder Cup in Rome last Autumn, which saw him reduced to tears following a record-breaking defeat alongside Brooks Koepka on day two.

Scheffler was one of 12 American stars who fell to a 16.5-11.5 defeat to their European rivals at Marco Simone, in a terrible week for Zach Johnson's team. The low point for Scheffler came in the Saturday morning foursomes, when he partnered with Koepka against Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland.

Despite forming a formidable pairing on paper, the world No. 1 and five-time major champion were blown away by their Scandinavian rivals, losing the match 9&7.

The thumping defeat wrote Scheffler and Koepka into the record books for all the wrong reasons, with Hovland and Aberg landing the biggest winning margin in Ryder Cup history. It dumped more misery on the Americans, who had failed to win a single match on day one.

It then proved all too much for Scheffler, who was seen breaking down in tears in the aftermath of his defeat. Three months on, the world No. 1 has been able to reminisce on the defeat as he gears up to start his 2024 season at The Sentry this week.

"Brooks and I just played really bad," he said looking back on Wednesday. "It was one of those deals where I got off to a bad start. I think I hit it in the rough on one, and then he hit it into the trees from there, and then I missed the green on two.

"Then I hit an awful chip on three, and all of a sudden we're three down and then things just kind of started to spiral out of control and obviously I was not pleased with how that match finished." On the back of the record-breaking loss, the world No. 1 was left out of the Saturday afternoon fourballs.

He was quick to bounce back though, battling back to earn half-a-point in a remarkable singles match against Jon Rahm a day later. Despite the overall defeat, there was a small win for Scheffler, who was pleased with how he bounced back on the final day of play.

"[I] go out on Sunday and I played another really good round of golf," he added. "[I] shot six or seven-under and ended up tying that match to Jon [Rahm]. It was one of those ones where he was really playing great golf that week and sometimes it's hard to keep up with that.

"But I was proud of how I fought that week... My expectations I place on myself is to go have a good attitude and be prepared and then the rest isn't up to me. So after having tough losses, yeah, you kind of just -- life goes on."
