A woman has told how a call from a solicitor out of the blue after her ex-partner committed suicide had left her blindsided and unsure of what to do. She shared how the couple, who had been together for almost 20 years and had never married, were childfree, admitting that after she found problems using birth control, her ex had undergone a vasectomy instead.

However, after finding out he had cheated on her three years ago she left him, leaving him to remarry, while she went on to have a baby with her boyfriend: “We are very happy and we love our little family very much,” she said.

She also admitted that her ex had always texted her on special occasions, like birthdays and holidays, however, she had never replied, with the last text she received from him a lengthy ‘hurtful’ one when he found out about her daughter. “I never answered and he never texted me again. A few months later my ex ended his life. This was about 4 months ago. His wife is apparently giving birth anytime now. I was surprised,” she said, in a clear reference to her late ex's vasectomy.

Since then, she shared how she had been contacted by a solicitor out-of-the-blue who told her some shocking news: “They told me that I have inherited my ex’s estate. He had left everything to me besides some to his parents' pension and his nephew,” she said, before continuing: “I got a letter from him apologising for what he did and saying that he loved me and wished me and my family happiness and he wanted to help with that.”

Following the surprise inheritance, she told how his parents and wife had been left 'shocked and furious' that he’d left all of his estate to her. “They have demanded that I leave them everything,” she said, before admitting she wanted to keep it because it was what she and her late ex both wanted.

After asking for advice from Reddit readers she received more than 5.5k comments, and 19k votes, with many on her side: “Hire a lawyer and get them to take care of the details,” said one. “Don’t spend this money as any and all money from the estate to them should have been taken care of by probate, but they may contest the will. You are not obligated to give any of that money back unless ordered by the court.”

Another reader said it was her call on what to do: “Up to you if you want to keep it or ration it out. People get really weird about inheritance money and will actively destroy their own families over jealousy and the such.”

Another confirmed their own arrangements were similar: “I have made it explicit to my family that if anything happens to me it all goes to my ex wife,” while another said it was clear he had left her all the money as he knew his wife had been cheating on him: “His current wife cheated on him and he knew. That's why he left everything to you. Block all of them and go 'no contact'. It's a gift and it's yours to keep. Do not give them anything. A gift freely given is yours to keep.”
