A woman has said the £30,000 she spent on cosmetic surgery is money well spent because it has allowed her to feel more confident about the way she looks.

She said she wanted to make sure that she wasn't "ugly anymore" but caused a big stir on social media by posting a video to TikTok where she talks about how she has changed her outward appearance, but she has found that she is "damned if you do damned if you don't" by online trolls because while she is very happy with the results of her cosmetic procedures, someone will always have something abusive to say about them.

‌Mia Dio, 22, an influencer from Miami, Florida, began her cosmetic surgery at 16 when she got her first lip fillers, her first plastic surgery was a nose job at 17. She has more than five million followers on the social-media platform and said she posted her video titled 'I was ugly until I spent 30K on a new face' to show her female-dominated audience that they should not be comparing themselves to her because in her own words, she does not look like herself since having cosmetic surgery.

Mia's surgeries have included a nose job, breast augmentation, botox, filler, thread lifts and veneers, but said about her online presence: "You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. ‌People claim I’m mentally ill or fake for doing all these procedures but as someone who’s always making content and on film it’s benefited my career.

‌"People think I’m promoting the lifestyle and I’m not, I’m just making myself happy. ‌As long as I’m transparent with my audience I have no regrets. ‌I made the video because I feel that as an individual with a platform, I have an obligation to ensure I am not promoting unrealistic beauty standards.‌

"I have a highly female-dominated audience, and I frequently get messages saying that they wished they looked like me. ‌I thought it was important to make the video to ensure my audience is not comparing themselves to me, because I don’t even look like me. ‌The response generally has been really positive, and people appreciated my transparency."

‌She said she understands there's always going to be negative feedback because that's the way the internet works, but she explained that while she didn't think she was ugly before she wanted to use an eye-catching title for her video, adding: "‌I knew there would be some people who called me ugly before, and I wanted to own my narrative."‌

Her insecurity about her looks were what sparked her run with plastic surgery but she now uses her online presence to help other women to stop comparing themselves to others and their personal beauty standards because, as she points out: "I don't even look like me. ‌My journey with cosmetic procedures started at 16 when I first got lip filler and at the time it cost me £513.15 ($650), the plastic surgery began with a nose job at 17 that cost £3947.28 ($5000),” said Mia.‌

“So far I have had a nose job, breast augmentation, botox, filler, thread lifts and veneers just last month in Miami I redid my thread lifts and Botox for £3630.70 ($4,500). ‌If I had to put a number on it up until now I would say I have spent £23683.65 ($30,000). ‌Right now I have no surgeries planned. I’ve stopped because I’m truly satisfied. ‌I achieved the look I wanted and it’s best not to take it further and venture into uncanny valley territory."‌

However, Mia has has had to put up with some negative feedback online, with comments including: ‌"Maybe you should spend 30,000 on therapy," while another said: ‌"Me when I am delusional and spend thousands on ridiculous surgery because I couldn’t learn to love myself," and ‌"Just imagine if she spent all that money on her education instead, she might believe she has more value than just her appearance."‌

And while some of the surgery she has had has been tough to take, she says that because she has such a good support network, she is able to deal with it. She said: "My family, boyfriend, friends and fans have always had my back and appreciate my transparency. I'm lucky to have a lot of love in my life. ‌My family and friends are amazing, and so supportive. ‌They think that I’m beautiful no matter what, but have never shamed me for my choices."
