The total prize money has been confirmed for the first PGA Tour event of 2024 at The Sentry.

The event, formerly known as The Sentry Tournament of Champions, takes place at the Kapalua Plantation Course on the island of Maui in Hawaii and begins on Thursday. The tournament marks the first event of 2024, as the new PGA Tour season begins.

The Sentry tournament includes a field of 59 players, which includes all of the winners of events during the 2023 season and does not feature a cut at the 36-hole mark. A total of 35 players feature in the field having won at least one event on the PGA Tour last year.

The rest of the field is made up of players who featured in the top 50 of the FedExCup last year. Viktor Hovland won last year's FedExCup, with his victory at the Tour Championship securing £14 million ($18 million) in prize money.

On the subject of money, the PGA Tour has confirmed the total purse for the Sentry Tournament. In total, there will be $20 million (£15.8 million) available for the players, where the winner will receive $3.6 million (£2.85 million) as well as the glory of being the champion.

The runner-up in the event is set to pocket $2.16 million (£1.71 million), while third place will earn $1.36 million (£1.08 million). All of the prizes are subject to being decreased if there is a tie for each respective position in the final leaderboard.

Some of the main stars of the PGA Tour are set to take to the course this week in the first event of 2024. Those included in the field are World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, Open champion Brian Harman, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, and Tommy Fleetwood, among others.

Even though a number of the PGA Tour's biggest names are set to take part, one player who will not be involved is Rory McIlroy. The World No.2 qualified for the event, which typically features a field of 60 players, but will instead be traveling to the Middle East next week for his first event of the season at the Dubai Invitational.

McIlroy has not played in The Sentry since 2019 and admitted after the conclusion of last season that he would be unlikely to feature in the tournament this year. The four-time major champion has been enjoying a break since his last tournament, which saw him finish tied-22nd at the DP World Tour Championship in November and win the Race to Dubai in the process.

"I'd say my schedule will look pretty much the same as it did this year," McIlroy told reporters last August. "I'll most likely -- I'm not a huge Hawaii guy, so I'll probably not go to Hawaii."

McIlroy is not the only player to not feature at The Sentry event this week. There will be no Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, after he agreed a £450 million deal with LIV Golf last month.
