A family say their "Christmas was ruined" after they left a pub before their meals were even complete following "an awful experience".

One of the group posted on TripAdvisor, under the username of Traveler37023599155, to slam Cookhouse Pub & Carvery in Widnes, Cheshire. They had spent Christmas Day there with their relatives but a lack of communication, delays to service and an uncomfortable atmosphere spoiled their occasion.

They claimed it was extremely busy at the restaurant, so much so it was difficult to walk from their table to the toilet or the bar, and so accused the bosses of putting "profit over people".

Writing on TripAdvisor, Traveler37023599155 said: "Came for Christmas dinner so looking forward to it however it was an awful experience. You crammed far to many people in. No communication at all. Some had the carvery and by the time they finished two of our party only just got there (sic) mains. Took over an hour for puddings to come even after being chase up many times.

"Left before our coffees which was included in the price couldn't take sitting in there. Couldn't even go the bar or the toilet as no room to walk around. You put profit before people. Not enjoyable experience. Really ruined our Christmas, such a shame as food was lovely, staff couldn't even help as they were so busy. We go many times to the Cookhouse however this experience has made us not want to go back."

The pub's general manager has since apologised on TripAdvisor, but suggested the majority of guests on Christmas Day had a positive experience. They wrote: "Thank you for taking the time to review your Christmas Day experience with us and we sincerely apologise for not offering the level of experience that you have become accustomed to on your previous visits. Although we tried to ensure that all our customers had a great day we do understand that this was not the case for a minority and we are sorry that you did not have an enjoyable experience with us. We do hope that this will not deter you from dining with us again the future as we would like the opportunity to rectify this with you."

A party of 12 in total including 4 children (all of which are very fussy eaters) and we all loved it! Will definitely be back again next year!"

Another recent review reads: "Myself and my partner and family went to the cookhouse a couple of times during December, both experiences were brilliant, food was of high standard and excellent, the staff were lovely and were extremely helpful, every need was met by the staff, would always recommend the Cookhouse to friends and family and will definitely be back."
