Travel fans can start the New Year with big savings on flights to Europe by simply signing up for a members-only travel club.

Low-cost airline Wizz Air has a little-known loyalty scheme that doesn't just offer coupons and onboard benefits, it also instantly reduces the onscreen price of hundreds of flights offering immediate discounts for savvy travellers. By simply signing up to become a member of the Wizz Air Discount Club, passengers can enjoy access to the free entry-level "Lite" membership to start saving straight away.

This year, frequent flyers could be landing in Portugal for less than the cost of a sandwich at the airport, with seats from London Gatwick to Faro costing members as little as £8.99 in April.

Other incredibly low-cost fares available for Wizz Air Discount Club Lite members include one-way deals from Gatwick to Malaga for £8.99 in April, Luton to Larnaca in Cyprus for £11.84 in March and Gatwick to Dalaman for £17.99, also in April.

While the free Wizz Air membership will help to reduce the price of tickets, frequent flyers may want to consider purchasing a paid-for package to save even more.

Passengers who subscribe to the €34.99 Standard Wizz Air Membership will save at least €10 on ticket fares from €19.99 and an additional €5 on checked-in 20kg or 32kg bags, as well as regular discounts and promotions. Upgrades are also available for passengers wanting to take larger-size hand luggage or checked bags or anyone wanting to pre-book their seat before they fly.

For families who like to travel together, the £69.99 annual Wizz Discount Club Group Membership offers coupons and discounts for the subscriber and up to five fellow flyers, making it cheaper to stay together when you go away.

To welcome in the New Year, Wizz Air is also offering 24% off selected flights before March, 15. The money-off deal is available to all passengers and prices include a free carry-on bag measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 20 cm and weighing less than 10kg.

Family favourite Jet2 is offering 10% off all flights, with an additional 5% discount for MyJet2 members and Ryanair has summer flights starting from as little as £29.99 during the high season.
