Michelle Keegan has admitted she felt 'embarrassed' after being voted Sexiest Female 12 times during her time on Coronation Street.

The actress, who was a fan favourite for six years before leaving in 2014, won numerous awards including "sexiest female." multiple times between 2008 and 2014. Despite being involved in many dramatic storylines, including those about abortion, murder and surrogacy, Michelle revealed that she felt 'frustrated' that her acting skills were often overlooked due to her appearance.

Speaking in a new interview, she said: "It was embarrassing. Because I was in a lot of heavy storylines... And then at the end of it, when the accolade was sexiest female, it was so frustrating."

The Brassic star added to The Observer: "And the funny thing is, I'm not sexy! I've never been sexy! My friends have always laughed about it. Even when I say the word it makes me cringe." Michelle's latest project, a thriller called Fool Me Once, is now available on Netflix. She stars alongside Joanna Lumley in the show, which is based on Harlan Coben's novel of the same name.

Michelle, who plays the troubled widow Maya Stern, shared that Joanna, who portrays the mother of Maya's slain husband, encouraged her to be "more feisty" in scenes. She said: "They were so much fun. I mean it's not every day that you tell Joanna Lumley to 'F**off!' That was quite nerve-racking.

"She made me feel very comfortable from the off. She's such a legend. She is so good at playing that feisty role and it made me go a bit feistier. But in rehearsals, I wouldn't swear. I would just say, 'The F word'. On a take, I'd swear but in rehearsals, I wouldn't swear in her face. I couldn't do."

In the TV version of Harlan Coben's Fool Me Once, Michelle plays former ops pilot, Maya Stern, who gets a shock after returning from the war to find out that her beloved husband has been brutally murdered.
