Prince Andrew has avoided a further costly sexual assault claim after a second accuser failed to meet a legal deadline.

Johanna Sjoberg had until a month ago to file her case against the royal, but did not do so. It has saved Andrew from becoming embroiled in a second civil case in New York, the first of which cost him a reported £12million in an out-of-court settlement to Virginia Giuffre.

Sources have said the Duke of York is “mightily relieved” not to have faced another court case in the States at a time when he is starting to be seen in public with the Royal Family again. But despite the boost, any hopes Andrew had of a positive start to 2024 and a return to public life will be short-lived. Last week, the duke was pictured making the traditional Christmas Day walk to St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk with his family.

But from today, the 63-year-old will be poised for further potentially damning claims against him to be made after he was named in a New York civil defamation case that paedophile Jeffrey Epstein is at the centre of. Andrew has been named in evidence as part of “teen sex slave” Ms Giuffre’s defamation case against Epstein’s former lover, the jailed British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell. Now, testimony from more than 170 people is set to be made public.

Judge Loretta Preska, who has overseen the now-settled defamation case, ruled: “This material should be unsealed.” Already, as part of the case, Andrew has been named, with Ms Sjoberg alleging the duke fondled her breast while Ms Giuffre sat on his other knee. Andrew has repeatedly denied all allegations of sexual impropriety made against him.
