Darts star Chris Dobey will face no further action after a controversial gesture during his defeat to Rob Cross.

The 33-year-old looked to be on the way to the semi finals of the PDC World Championships by racing into a 4-0 lead. But he could do nothing to halt Cross’ recovery as he came back to win 5-4 - and set up a last-four clash with wonderkid Luke Littler at the Alexandra Palace.

While his journey in the tournament has come to an end, there could potentially be more consequences for Dobey. He was pictured making a throat-cut gesture on the stage and there have been suggestions that he could face a fine.

Dobey has yet to speak out on his gesture but took to social media to mock Sunderland football fans. He had promised to take the Sid Waddell Memorial Trophy to the Stadium of Light this weekend had he run out victorious.

A Newcastle fan, he did not miss the opportunity to stir the rivalry even more ahead of this weekend’s derby in the FA Cup. Taking to Twitter, he said: “All the mackems piping up now I see. We’ll see if they pipe up again on Saturday or will they be in hiding.”

Elsewhere, eventual victor Cross also gave his thoughts on his victory and talked through his mentality when faced up with near-certain elimination, while also talking up a semi-final showdown with Littler.

He said: "4-0 down and I've not played. I didn't feel like myself. I just pushed on. Credit to Chris early on, he gave me a kick in the mouth. It's all about me, though. I still believed even when I was 4-0 down. I have got nerves of steel.

"If I play Luke Littler in the semis... look, he is 16 and whatever he achieves he has a bright future. If he comes through that he will probably be the favourite!"

Cross’ semi-final clash with Littler takes place on Tuesday, January 2 at 7:30pm, while two of Michael van Gerwen, Scott Williams, Dave Chisnall and Luke Humphries will all take part in the other match. The final of the PDC World Championship takes place the following day and gets underway at 7pm.
