Turn woe into hope

A year of hope stands before us. In 2024, a nation desperate to start a new chapter can turn the page on 14 years of miserable and unproductive Tory rule.

Like unwanted guests who refuse to realise it is time to leave the party, the Government needs to be cast out. They have not only overstayed their welcome but trashed the place they were invited into.

It falls to Labour, if they are given the keys to power, to rebuild a country whose potential has been squandered and public services neglected by a succession of Tory PMs. The scale of the task is daunting but surmountable. If he wins this year’s election, Sir Keir Starmer will inherit a barren legacy.

The NHS will need to be restored to its former glory, the flatlining economy will need to be jolted back to life and our nation will need to be put back on the path to prosperity.

A country where nothing works any more must be repaired and renovated. Rectifying the damage done by the Tories requires patience and determination. Labour must remind the public that governments can be a force for good.

Resolve

A country which has withdrawn from the world stage must re-engage with the international community. More than ever we will have to stand by Ukraine as resolve is tested in the face of Russian aggression.

Britain should work with international partners to put pressure on Israel and Hamas to end the bloodshed in the Middle East. And we should prepare for the frightening possibility Donald Trump could win the US election. His return to the White House would threaten the existence of Nato, set back efforts to tackle the climate crisis, destabilise world trade and embolden Vladimir Putin.

Amid the gloom there are embers of optimism. This paper doesn’t only wish for a Labour victory in the election, we’re also rooting for England and Scotland at the Euros and for the UK’s athletes to strike gold at this summer’s Olympics and Paralympics.

This could be a historic year that changes this country for the better. And, with the prospect of change, comes the opportunity of hope.
