Confused Alzheimer's sufferer, 67, brutally beaten after trying wrong car door

Horrific footage shows the moment a pensioner with severe dementia was savagely beaten up in a car park after mistakenly approaching his attackers’ car thinking it was his daughter's.

Florentino Hurtado, 67, was diagnosed with advanced-stage dementia and Alzheimer’s two years ago. CCTV footage shows the moment the man tries to open the door of a car which is believed to belong to Trayvion Lockridge and Derodric Stephens, who afterwards approach Hurtado.

In the distressing footage, two men punch Hurtado to the ground before one repeatedly punches him viciously in the head. Throughout the attack Hurtado offers no response or retaliation.

Lockridge and Stephens are now both in police custody following the horrific assault in Houston, in which they stomped Hurtado to the ground. They are facing charges of aggravated robbery of a victim over the age of 65 years old.

The state requested that Lockridge’s bond be set at a huge $1 million while the defence countered with a request for just $3,000 - his bond was eventually set at $50,000, reflecting the fact that Lockridge punched Hurtado in the head eight times and stomped on him four times. Stephens’ bond has not been set, with the man currently facing five pending cases according to prosecutors. His other cases carry a penalty reaching up to 99 years in prison if he is found guilty.

Jessica, Hurtado’s daughter, told KTRK: “My dad, you can see him stumble up and get up, and you could tell he was obviously confused and dazed as well, and he started wandering towards the pawnshop. A simple push, a simple 'go away' is the most that would have been necessary.”

Hurtado suffered a broken cheekbone and multiple cuts which needed stitches - and he may have suffered a traumatic brain injury. Hurtado does not even speak a word of English, so wouldn’t have understood if the men were trying to tell him anything. “It's hard to watch (the surveillance video), to see someone have that aggression towards somebody and the fact that it's our dad,” Jessica added. “He didn't deserve it.”

After the attack, Hurtado is seen wandering aimlessly around the car park after dusting himself down while the two attackers escaped. The men took Hurtado’s mobile phone and left in the car after he had staggered away.

It is reported that the victim has no recollection of the attack. There was one moment while in hospital where he remembered the attack and questioned why someone would do it to him - but since then, all recollection has been lost, ABC13 Houston reported.

"We're already dealing with a lot of Alzheimer's, and anyone who has family dealing with dementia knows it's a lot,” added Jessica. “So the fact that this had to happen is just sad. It's really sad. My father did not deserve this at all. It's really sad, my father did not deserve this at all. We just want justice for my dad. That's all we want.” Houston cops continue to investigate.
