Two young men were captured seriously injuring themselves after jumping 100ft off a popular cliff-diving spot and bellyflopping into the water.

The gut-wrenching sound of the bodies hitting the water can be heard as the botched cliff dive saw them plunge down the rock face into the ravine below.

The unidentified men were captured leaping one after another in the area of Canteras de Deuco in Angol, Chile, on January 4, as the Fire Department rushed to the scene to save the men.

Shocking footage shows the exact moment the pair jump from the cliff, next to a wooden cross, as the first lands just a mere feet from the cliff edge.

In the clip, the gut-wrenching sound of the body hitting the water at full impact can be heard as water can be seen spraying high into the air.

The second man, narrowly escaping death, tumbles down as he fails to retain posture and hits the water with a bone-shattering thud.

Reportedly, the friends reached speeds of well over 50mph as they plummeted down the side of the rock face.

The alarm was raised by concerned onlookers, one of whom told the Fire Department he'd experienced seeing a similar accident at the diving spot.

Meanwhile, the second commander of the Angol Fire Department, Pablo Staub, went on to tell press that "around 4.30pm on Wednesday we received a report of a person falling from the Canteras de Deuco hill".

He added: "They say that they threw themselves from the cross. A boy who works in the region asked us for help because he had an accident here before, jumping from the rocks."

Both young men were taken to hospital in Angol, southern Chile.

Reportedly, one of the men said to be 22 years old, from Santiago, sustained "serious" but unspecified injuries.

Meanwhile, details about his companion's age nor details following the incident were provided.

Speaking out about the incident, local tour guide Ivan Ibasque told Chilean media that the pair are lucky to still be alive.

He said: "At that height, the water acts like a solid, and it's from that height that they hit the water. It's like falling onto rocks."

Local media reported that people have lost their lives in previous botched jumps from the same cliff.
