MasterChef viewers were left stunned as they were told the correct pronunciation of Chicken Kiev during its latest episode.

The BBC cooking competition returned on Thursday night for a special episode that saw five restaurant critics try to impress. Jay Rayner was crowned champion of the Battle Of The Critics where he was presented with a gold trophy in the shape of a knife and fork.

However, it was critic William Sitwell who stole the show for many viewers. MasterChef fans were left scratching their heads as William cooked up a Chicken Kiev for Gregg Wallace and John Torode. As he prepared the dish the word 'Chicken Kiev' was repeated many times, but fans were confused by the pronunciation.

Viewers took to social media where they were left reeling that they have been saying the food wrong all their lives. One said: "It's weird how they said chicken Kiev." Another asked: "So, are there any other obviously uncultured souls out there, who still pronounce it chicken kiev, rather than chicken keeev?" Someone else added: "Wait, what - you are supposed to pronounce Chicken Kiev…chicken keeve - not having that!"

A fourth wrote: "Have I been pronouncing chicken Kiev wrong all my life?" While another commented: "I’ve just learned I’ve been pronouncing chicken Kiev wrong." I'm A Celebrity star and food critic Grace Dent also appeared on the special episode alongside Jay, William, Leyla Kazim, and Jimi Famurewa.

The five critics finally felt what it's like to create incredible dishes under pressure in a short amount of time and viewers got to watch them put their blood, sweat and tears into their meaningful dishes. Although Grace is known for dining on lavish meals at five-star restaurants, she showcased her skills in making family-favourite meals.

At one point, she even broke down in tears after hearing hosts Gregg and John's positive review of her butter chicken dish. She was speechless and when Gregg asked her how she was feeling, she said: "In my head, I was going to say lots of witty things here and there was going to be lots of banter but in reality, I’m just sitting here with my lip wobbling. I dunno what’s up with me."

Speaking to the camera after hearing the positive comments, Grace added: "I didn’t realise how emotional I was about it all until they said that they liked my food at the end and it lifts all the pressure off you. I felt lighter and giddier and a little bit proud of myself." Grace admitted to finally 'understanding' the contestants' pain when competing.

The star, who recently took part in this year's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, said: "I will never think the same way about contestants ever again, I will now feel every moment of their pain, their journey, their exhaustion..." Popular critic and journalist Jay was announced as the winner as he quipped: "I'd like to say we're all winners but, no... Grace, Laila, Jimmy, William... Thank you very much, guys. I love you all."
