Sarah Ferguson was granted the right to a royal funeral at Windsor by late Queen ahead of her Christmas reconciliation, it has been claimed.

The late monarch is reported to have sanctioned a St George’s Chapel send off for Fergie when she dies. It has emerged that it will be followed by interment at the royal burial ground in nearby Frogmore - adjacent to the mausoleum created as the final resting place for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Frogmore is based one mile from the royal vault at St George’s Chapel, where the Queen and Prince Philip rests. The only monarch at the royal burial ground is the Duke of Windsor, who was briefly known as Edward VIII, who died in 1972 is buried there alongside his wife Wallis Simpson.

When her Majesty died last year, her two surviving corgis were given to her son Prince Andrew and his ex-wife to care for. The decision was said to a reflection of the close bond between the Queen and the Duchess of York.

It came as Fergie returned to Sandringham for the Royal Family’s Christmas celebrations over the festive period for the first time in over 30 years. The Daily Mail report the decision was made towards the end of the Queen's life, a number of months before her death in September 2022.

Thr 65-year-old joined senior members of The Firm for the first time since the 90s as they greeted well-wishers outside St Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas Day. She had not been seen with the royals at their Norfolk residence since her divorce from Prince Andrew in 1996.

In a post on Instagram showing her sharing a beaming smile with daughters Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, Fergie spoke of the family's happiness and wished her followers a Merry Christmas. She wrote in her caption accompanying the photo: "We are enjoying each other’s company and feeling grateful today. "I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Happy Christmas to anyone who celebrates and season’s greetings to all!"

Photographs taken outside the church showed the Princess Beatrice with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, and Prince Eugenie with Jack Brooksbank. Queen Camilla’s family, including her children Tom Parker Bowles and his younger sister Laura Lopes, were also each invited with their children to spend Christmas at Sandringham with the royals.

Royal Christmases traditionally feature the greeting of people outside the church, and a family lunch with turkey and all the trimmings. Sandringham House has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs for more than 160 years, and now belongs to the King.

The royals are said to partake in family activities like Charades or jigsaw puzzles if they spend time indoors, after which they enjoy a buffet dinner. In line with their German heritage, they exchange presents on Christmas Eve, the day they all arrive at Sandringham.
