Chris Gascoigne admits part of Peter Barlow's Corrie exit 'upset him'

Former Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne has opened up on his exit from the ITV soap.

The actor, 55, hasn't ruled out a return to the soap again one day in the future but for now, Chris' character Peter Barlow has departed the cobbled streets of Weatherfield in a bid to enjoy a fresh start away from the street that holds so many memories for him.

Speaking about his Corrie exit, after over two decades working on the show, Peter admitted there was a "thing that upset me" when it came to filming his final scenes and revealed his plans for the future.

Corrie fans were left inconsolable on Boxing Day as Peter said his final goodbye to the street after 23 years. Peter had been having a tough time since he accidentally ran over Stephen Reid with his taxi, thinking Stephen was going to hurt Jenny Connor. Since then, Peter's been feeling really down and fighting his own battles.

In last night's episode of the ITV soap, Peter made up his mind to leave Weatherfield for good, which made everyone really sad. The emotional scenes were full of feelings as Carla and Peter remembered their time together before he packed up and went to the tram stop to leave forever.

Discussing his on-screen character's exit with BBC News, actor Chris admitted: "The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don’t just mean the actors. I’ve known all these people for nearly half my life. I’ve grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I’m not getting any younger."

Corrie viewers were super emotional as Peter waved goodbye to Carla and the street on Boxing Day. As the emotional scenes aired, one fan tweeted: "I will miss you so much Peter Barlow #corrie," while another wrote: "Goodbye Peter Barlow it's been great #Corrie." Another fan posted: "Little did we know when we met Chris in April that it'd be his final year on the cobbles. And what a privilege it's been to watch him all these years! A class act through and through, effortlessly delivering nothing less than perfection every time. One of #Corrie's modern greats."

Since filming his final Corrie scenes, Chris has been busy playing Captain Arthur K. Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan. But could he come back to the street one day, or is this the final farewell for Peter Barlow? ""Of course, I've not ruled a return out, it's been such a part of my life," Chris admitted as he confirmed the door has been left open for his character to pop up in Weatherfield again.
