A Brit gran has been left bedbound abroad after she suffered an asthma attack and developed severe pneumonia whilst on holiday in Spain.

Kelly Cody, from Benwell, Newcastle, flew to Gran Canaria with her pal and her seven-year-old granddaughter as an early Christmas treat. But their trip turned into a nightmare after the 44-year-old was admitted to hospital after she struggled to breathe.

Medics found that she was suffering from pneumonia and put her in a coma. Her daughter, Georgia, 27, had to travel to the Spanish Island to be by her mother's beside so she could be there once she gained consciousness.

The family were given a glimpse of hope once Kelly displayed signs of improvement and woke up. Despite this, she was unable to walk or lift her arms. Georgia, from Benwell, said: "My mum went on holiday on December 3 with my daughter and a friend.

"She ended up having an asthma attack and could not breathe and was taken to hospital. No one knew which hospital and we could not get any information and I was in the UK so didn't know what to do.

"I contacted the embassy and they tracked down my mum and told me what happened. I flew over to get my daughter and bring her back to the UK and then flew back out to be with my mum.

"She was in for about eight days waiting for her to wake up. She did wake up and was showing signs of improvement but was told she would have to learn to walk again and she couldn't move her arms."

Georgia remained by her mum's bedside as she made her recovery but flew home to spend Christmas with her daughter, reports Chronicle Live. She said: "When I landed on December 22 I got a phone call from the hospital saying she was back in a coma. I didn't know anything for a couple of days. Every time I rang the hospital and I was cut off the phone and they didn't understand me.

"I asked on social media if anyone could help me and people have contacted the hospital to speak on my behalf but they can't really give information because they aren't family. Someone who spoke better English rang me and told me she was back in a coma and they had been trying to bring mum out of it but she was quite anxious and couldn't breathe so had to sedate her again.

"I don't even have the words to describe what we have been going through. I'm waiting every day for an update from the hospital. I feel like we have gone back to square one because she was improving but now she's back in a coma and will have to go through recovery again."

Now, Georgia is planning to fly back out to Gran Canaria to be with her mum but is hoping to raise funds to either help fly her mum home, help pay for her flights and accommodation so she can stay by her bedside.

She said: "It was £350 for accommodation while I was there and £70 for each flight, I have been on four and had my daughter's flight. I've set up a Go Fund Me to see if it can do anything to help at all with getting my mum home by getting her flown back over, or if not to help me get over there so I can stay and look after her until she's ready to come home."
