In a frightful fall from the fourth story, a beloved estate agent ended his life, devastating a community.

The 56-year-old man jumped from the fourth floor of a building in New York City's Upper East Side area on Tuesday. He has been named as Tom Cooper, a Douglas Elliman real estate agent and tenant of the building.

Tom Cooper, a California-born UC Berkeley graduate, lived in a one-bedroom flat, which he rented in January 2021. He left behind a note, police say.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our dear friend and colleague," Elliman’s president and CEO Scott Durkin said in a statement.

Vincent Scaldaferri, the site supervisor next door, told New York Post he did not realise the man who had jumped was a person at first. "I was pulling in, so I was looking ahead and right in front of me a body comes flying down. I thought it was a sack of laundry at first."

"I saw it when it hit the ground. It was kind of like he landed on his shoulder side, and then he fell over on his back and he went into convulsion immediately," the witness explained.

“He wasn’t talking at all, bleeding from the head. His [left] leg was broken. The middle section of his body looked like it was just a bag of bones."

In his job, Cooper worked with people selling and buying homes. He recently helped with the sale of a big townhouse at 24 W. 10th St. for $18.5 million.

"Closed today for $18.5M!" Cooper shared on Instagram with pictures of the house on Nov. 10. "Absolutely thrilled for my wonderful buyers who can now call this stately Greenwich Village brownstone their home. Truly a stunning house, and part of New York City history!"

People who knew Cooper say he was a charming guy who had just made a good business deal. "Everyone is devastated," a source told The Post. "He was a lovely, lovely man. We are all shocked by the news. His sister is on her way to New York right now."

Meanwhile, Cooper had three current sale listings at 240 Centre St., also known as the Police Building - a beautiful downtown landmark that used to be Manhattan's police headquarters until 1973. This is also where Cooper posed for his last Instagram post on Dec. 22, standing next to a glowing Christmas tree in the building's lobby.

Here, he represented filmmaker Meghan Ellison - the daughter of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison - who's asking $3.7 million for a unique one-bedroom set under a dome on the top floor. StreetEasy shows the listing remains active.

Cooper was a longtime Manhattan resident who served on the board of trustees for the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
